Did '74s come with a sound pad?

My car doesn't have one and I'm wondering if there's any reason to bother picking one up for sake of authenticity. Do these pads really do anything (other than providing a layer of combustible material inside the engine bay to soak up oil and other flammable liquids?)

It's less a sound pad and more of a thermal pad to reduce heat transfer through the firewall into the back seat area. Many people run without them.

Yes, '74's came with one...but after 30 years, most have started to crumble and have been pulled out because they were making a mess. It does reduce the sound a bit. If there is something in your engine compartment that would soak it with flammable liquid...you should address that first. Mine is completely dry. They have a smooth, finish that is really not porous...so they should not soak up liquids if they are in good condition. They are easy to replace.

I replaced mine with one purchased here. It does deaden the sound a bit more than without.

What's really interesting is the sound pad put on by Porsche in the backseat/shelf area. Pretty solid and durable looking material. See all that gray stuff in the backseat?
