Alpine CDE-78205
I removed the CD-player in my old 74/75 911 today, cos I am not happy about the sound it makes
![]() ![]() But it seems to be a high quality piece of kit this Apline, it even stated a 25W per channel! ![]() Maybe it is the speakers (Boston) that is the bad bits, and heartbreakingly so! ![]() So what do I do? Buy new speakers or just bin the whole stereo. I mean a stereo in this noisy, tin boxy car (It had a standard interieur, with not much worth called insulation, under the carpets - there are nothing. In the doors - nothing)... On the other side the noise of that engine!!! With headers and sportsexhausts it silences any electronic CD-generated noise (music) anyway... ![]() What about that Alpine then, it was brand new in november 1995... Shall I keep it or what? ![]() |

Ole,
It has been a while since I have been paying real close attention to car audio and I guess recently (say last 3 years?) they have started getting more power out of the head unit. The 25 watts you mention is very typical for older units and is not really 25 watts. But that's what is says, right? There are peak watts, and watts at ridiculously high frequencies and other games they play to make the label look good. I have an SC with an Alpine and some Infinity speakers, 5.25" I think, and the system is barely audible with a stock car. Yes it will get loud, but the bass must be turned down and the sound is awful. You need more power from an external amp and really need a high pass cross over to filter out what should go to the subs if your speakers are any smaller than 6.5". Even an amp with 25 watts will be way more powerful than the Alpine. I used to have a cheap 25W Kenwood and it was much better than the head unit alone. Doing this will get you clean, loud sound. Whether that will overcome your car without making you deaf is another subject. Ben

In the FWI department, I replaced a Blaupunkt with a very awkward user interface with an Alpine 9883. A modern unit, I just hooked it up to the speakers that were in the car...behind the original grills and very well could be the original speakers from 1984...and it sounds pretty good. Plenty of volume for normal use, and MP3 capability to boot.
![]() In-dash units have come a long way, so I'd be tempted to replace it, and perhaps the speakers as well. You may want to look around a bit and find a unit that has more of a "period" look to it. I know, the music is in the back. But for those long five-six hour road trips, tunes are nice.

I have that Alpine unit in my beater Volvo and love it. It came with a free i-pod cable from Crutchfield. My 911 is too loud to listen to music in. The howl from the motor is much more enjoyable.

speakers have a finite lifetime even if high quality when new
stock speakers are rarely of decent quality the 911 is a very noisy and poor env. for a stereo |
