Another 3.2 Exhaust upgrade question
I don't mean to flog a dead horse but here I go flogging a dead horse.I have been reading many many old threads on this topic but cannot seem to get the answer to my specific questions.
I am looking at making an exhaust/chip upgrade on an 84 3.2 which is totally stock . I will be installing a cat bypass that came with the car and was never installed. Also I will be adding a SW chip. The question I have is regarding the muffler. Will this set-up with the stock muffler be improved very much by adding a sport muffler or will I get the bulk of the benefits with just the chip and cat bypass? If a muffler is needed to really make the changes worthwhile, what is available that gives the performance improvement with the least increase in noise levels? Is there much difference in the power improvements with the various aftermarket mufflers or is all just noise? Also what is the magnitude of the flywheel horsepower expected with the proposed changes (bypass and chip)? and addition of sport muffler ? |
The chip is designed to work with the exhaust system to be used. Just the bypass and stock muffler will not yeild much with the chip, however, the chip, bypass and freer flowing sport muffler will get you 15 to 20 hp at the wheels, may be more, depending on the chip design. All chips are not equal.

i have an 87 carrera,i just now put fabspeed at bypass,sw chip and m&k exhaust.the car is day and night diffrent.when the car hit 4000 rpm,it feels like it is about to get off the ground.it is amazing and the m&k exhaust sound amazing without making neibors mad and there is no resonance inside whatsoever.highly recomended set up.

Your neighbors must be deaf, my M&K sets off alarms.
|
When I ordered my chip from SW, I sent him the exact config of my exhaust/intake/octane and he sent me a chip optimized for my car. You need to talk to Steve before you order.

is the M&K reasonable
Sounds like I need the sport muffler to make the changes worthwhile.
With that in mind I was thinking M&K so what is the concensus on the M&K 1 in 1 out arrangement - Is the noise reasonable considering neighbors etc. I really am not interested in making a bunch of noise, just power improvements |
mine is one in one out.my neighbors arent deaf, maybe ben has tamed,it is awsome.

Regarding LOUDNESS, how loud is the mb 1in/1out with cat bypass, compared to a mb 1in/2out without bypass?
|
How much did the M&K muffler cost?
|
My M&K is 1 in 2 out and it's not loud. Yes it's obviously louder than stock but just a nice deep throaty sound. I kept the catalytic converter on it, maybe that's why it's a bit tame. I'm not sure I noticed a power gain although when my brother went for a ride he thought it had more umph to it. Of course I dropped 23lbs. off the ass-end deleting the bumper guards and the difference in weight from the OEM to the M&K, (8 lbs.). Sorry for the obligitory picture but just have to show off Bens work :D

I went with a Dansk 1 in 2 out and am very pleased . Very nice product and sound.

had to beat a dead horse, after playing for a while with cat bypass, single in/single out GHL system, which sounds wonderful and does add some uummph. i have decided as per PCA showroom stock rule book to go with SSI'S and 2 in/2 out.
biggest bang for buck, legal to my class, dont have to run smog here due to car being "collectible" here in ariz.(yuck yuck!). thats about the best you can do w/out running straight pipes which will drive everyjuan nuts. if it only went to track, id run straight pipes out to gain every last pony avail. but then some tracks demand mufflers. mine goes to track 1-3 times a year, still enjoy slaying vettes thru the twisties! |
SSI versus CAT Bypass
There has been a great deal of discussion on the SSI versus CAT bypass/premuffler debate. From what I read on this site it appears that the SSI's are the greatest HP increase but when the cost per HP comes into the discussion the concensus seems to be that the Cat bypass route is almost as much hp for much less $.
Just wondering if there has been any actual unbiased dyno testing for comparison. It would nice to see the definitive results but I can't remember if there was any such testing when I read through all of the previous threads. For me , I will be trying the cat bypass route as I already have one to install and will just need to add the chip and sportmuffler. |
Two out from stock

I posted several threads about the cool way we modified a SS stock exhaust by gutting it and adding a flange on the right side with a restrictor plate (should I want to quiet it down) but haven't wanted to do that! My car idles like a "built" small block chevy and sounds amazing at speed. I also have a by-pass pipe and Steve Wong chip. I have some pictures of the mod if you haven't see the thread. |

Our host has them listed for about $525 |

I just put in an M&K muffler and corrdinated with Steve for the proper chip- muffler has a bit more resonance and deeper tone, but overall is not very much louder at all. The difference in performance was quite noticible though- smoother idle, smoother acceleration and though I did not time it, it feels quicker.
And it is a cool looking muffler! I was very pleased too with Ben's hardware kit- removing the stock, rusted on nuts and bolts were a pain that will be avoided next removal with the copper and stainless hardware in Ben's kit. My two cents for the horse flogging... Matt |
I have Ben's 1 / 1 on my 84, along with the Fabspeed bypass. I also have the Weltmeister chip on mine.
I agree with the previous "chip matters" statement - made about the same numbers (204 whp) stock w/ cat & stock muffler as with bypass & stock muffler, bypass & Bursch, bypass & Ben's (Ben's sounds the best of all the muffled ones I tried, FWIW), and bypass with Fabspeed muffler bypass - all with the Welt chip. Dyno'd again with the Ethanol - added fuel & lost about 3%. I'm hoping to be looking at picking up a Steve Wong chip, or I may see about trying Russell Berry's setup, as he's local to me & I could use the same dyno, we'll see. Ben's 1 / 1 was pretty quiet as-arrived, but mine blew all the packing out of it during the first couple of runs down the highway. After that, it sounded "sporty" :) Ben offered to "fix" it, but I like it better this way. |
