The steering column on my '70 E has the normal squeak that many do. It doesn't seem to have excessive up and down play though. Today, I took the wheel off to investigate and see if the plastic bushing was bad. I discovered that mine is different from the pictures in the Pelican tech article. I assume the pictures are from a later model, Any ideas where to go on this? Below is a picture I took.

I don't have any experience with early Porsches but I can offer these observations: The parts in the picture appear to be in excellent shape. Your car has obviously been cared for very well. If the sun is shining, I say put the steering wheel back on and drive.
The rule is, no more than one hour of maintenance or repair work for for every 2 hours of driving. Absolute max. ------------------ '83 SC |

I'm going to make your day if I'm right, and I think I am. What normally squeaks is the horn contact against the the contact ring. A little grease on that ring will likely cure the noise.

Just took another look at your picture and the ring does definitely look dry as a bone. (it's the brass ring about 3" in diameter)

Hey, I saw the Fenix Undergroud in a news clip. Has it risen again yet? Mark ------------------ Mark B. Wilson http://www.marksobsessions.20m.com/ |

I had a squeak and some play in the steering wheel. I fixed the movement in the steering wheel using a shim made from a beer can (Fosters I think). I lubricated the whole thing before putting it back together.
No squeak and no play - cost about 75 cents for the beer though! |

Yeah - it's not bad. I'm hoping one day I'll need a shim about the thickness of a keg!
