Bounce? Driveability Question.

Not an expert here.
'76/3.0L
I have a problem mostly on acceleration and worst at the lower rpms up to3000.
It lurches or bounces repeatedly and doesn't necessarily smooth out much until I get up to freeway cruising. Really annoying till then but I can still detect it slightly in 5th / 2500rpm.
Just had it tuned up and it seems to run fine otherwise. All ignition parts/ wires are fine.
Could this be motor/tranny mounts?
Anyone else recognize these symptoms?

Back in the '70s Bosch called it the Bonanza syndrome after the popular TV series and I don't believe the issue was ever resolved.

gungadin 12-02-2007 05:11 AM

HUH?
OK,,Bosch gave it a name "Bonanza" (like the theme song/galloping?) aaaannnd it's a syndrome.
So,,,common/normal porsche behavior??

'76/3.0 meaning a '76 Carrera?
Or a '76 with an SC 3.0?
If we are talking about engine performance, sputtering/hesitating is either fuel or ignition related and No, you don't have to live with it, it can be fixed.
If you mean that you can actually feel the car bouncing on take-off, a closer look at the CV joint bolts is in order.
Inspecting the motor/transmission mounts is easy.
How old is the clutch?

gungadin 12-02-2007 03:22 PM

Origionally a '76 2.7
Old daddy bought it new.
It has a '79SC engine Now
I don't have the info on the clutch or mount vintage. The clutch has a slight chatter but that seems un-related to the bounce. The swap was done at a shop in his home town. So no information is easily available.
It's just been doing the bounce thing since I acquired it.
My sense is that the mounts are the problem.
I does seem to improve a bit as it warms up but I don't know why.

gallop/surge/bounce/lurch hell I don't know what to call it.
The symptoms I took it to the shop for. Didn't get much bang for my buck there so I'm reluctant to take it back but might have to.

You can inspect the mounts yourself.
Inspect the rubber inserts with a light and mirror to see if they are worn out.
For the motor mounts, open the lid, put a 19?mm (3/4") socket on the bolts and check.
For the transmission, you'll have to go under there and do it.

If you already paid a shop to look for the problem, go back there and ask the service manager to sit in the pass seat while you drive and experience the rumble.
