Commute

I just wish my house and my office were further apart.

Imagine the horrors of having your office inside your home.

You have to come up with the story that taking the car out helps you 'think' -- that it's become a key part of the 'creative process.' http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/wink.gif

Super,

I guess you could head South for a while on the way to work ... that should take a while longer!

Just call me Mr. Magoo. I do get lost at times, on some very twisty roads. So far I've always found my way home.

Jack, I used to think that I can perform any mental process, any time. I also used to think I was invincible. Now I know we are more subjective, and fallible that I ever imagined. I had to lie down for a moment after arriving home last night. Just to collect myself. I imagine that work requiring creative processes is powerfully impacted by state of mind. I say if Jack wants wind in his hair, Jack gets wind in his hair. And I'm not sure this isn't more of a reason, than simply an excuse.

Jack, I'm thinking that the cost of those creative sojourneys should appear on your 1040. Send the IRS to me if they have any questions.

I'm with Jack on this one. It's a terrible burden working from home, when it comes to driving opportunities (or lack thereof). I find myself volunteering for more mundane household tasks--such as going for milk, returning the rented DVD, and maybe, just maybe, picking up extra feminine protection for my wife (something I would never do when we just had the VW Golf!). Lance.

I drive my '88 Carrera to work every day, as long as the weather is good. Its about 15 miles each way. I was reluctant to do this at first, because I would spend the whole day wondering if, upon returning to the car, I would find some horrible dent in it from some fool who parks by sound or flings their door open as wide as possible. Then I decided that if I was going to worry about that stuff, I would never drive it and should not have bought the car in the first place. The first time I drove my '57 Speedster replica into town, some old guy rear ended me. His excuse was that he had just been to the VA hospital. I found myself standing in the middle of the street, venting expletives on this almost-senile old man. I hope my own children stop me driving before I get to that state.

Currently, I live 2 miles from work. However, next month I get to move into my new home, which will extend my drive time by 10 miles of open, no stop light, little traffic roadway. Yea!! Frankley I was concerned because I wasnot able to get teh moptor ot operating temps with such short drives.

there's great wisdom in your words, Decolliber. Cars are like kids, in that it's easier to let them get dirty and then clean them up, than it is to keep them from getting dirty. Our relationships with our cars are Mater/Servant relationships. It's up to us to decide which role to let our cars play. Surely our beloved Kurt understands this.

I drive 40 miles each way to work and back. I usually drive the 911, unless it's snowy/salty. (Then I take the 'Scort, like today.)

Sometimes I'll take a different route, but it's mostly highway for me, and there's a couple of favorite off/on ramps. There's one on a nice open corner that most folks take at 30....that I take at speed if possible, threshold braking if there's no one behind me.

Geez, I wish I had you guys problems!! I work 32 miles away, and the record commute time so far has been just under 1:30 minutes. Usually averages 1:45, and at least twice a week, over 2:00. NOT FUN, and I would never put my P-car through that!

when i first got my targa i was living in san francisco and commuting to downtown san jose everyday (45 miles)! i couldn't have asked for a better deal.

before the porsche i was dragging my feet going to work in the '81 BMW (which is still running beautifully at 190,000 miles).

i found a good window of time to leave so that traffic was nil on 280, took the top down and sped along down the highway. it's amazing what a morning drive like that can do for you for the rest of the day.

funny part is on that on the way back it would be mid 70s when i left and overcast with occasional sprinkles of rain when i would get stuck in traffic in SF. other commuters looked at me with the top down like i was crazy!

they had no idea why i had this huge grin on my face. ...well it was a fun drive up until the traffic.

just wanted to share.
cheers,

I have a 40 mile round trip. crawling along in stop and go with that dogleg 1st isn't my favorite thing but the open road parts of the even make up for it. the ride home is usually late enough that i can have fun.

Late at night you can go VERY fast over the dunbarton.

ps. anyone know whos early blue targa is on 84 in the mornings heading east?? looks good, and i dont even like targas. i do see an early silver S coupe in palo alto very regularly.

paul,

i drive 10 miles to work and i do not get the nominal operating temp, during this time of year. in fact, 2 months ago, i discovered the yellow gunk by the oil refill. now, i take a longer route, 25 miles, going home, twice a week, plus take that porsche for a long weekend drive. i live in "dry" san diego and still had the yellow monster.

My daily commute is about 120km (about 70 miles) in total, mostly highway.

I've done the commute a couple of times in the 911, but it isn't pleasant at all...
All of the wind noise (it's an older Targa) makes it all but impossible to enjoy the trip... a shame, because the car really turns heads at the office http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif !

So, now I sit back and relax, turn on the cruise, put a nice CD in the player, AC to F75 in my -98 Audi A3 (I know, you don't have that model in the States..) - much nicer!

My 911 serves as a weekend-warrior only nowadays..
