When I changed my transmission oil (Swepco to Swepco) there was grey silt on the drain plug, no metal particles that I could see. What is the grey stuff?

IMO, I think it's just some of the oil that's turned to grease due to thickening where it doesn't move much around the magnetized drain plug. Don't worry about it if you see no metal particles.

Allan,
No, not oil! If it is stuck to the drain plug magnet, it is steel, and either particles worn off the dog teeth, or synchro rings, or bearings, AND, it is perfectly NORMAL! Chunks of metal are the only things in the old gear oil worth worrying about! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Can we talk chunk size? When I performed the drain, I found a little bit of the silt, but mostly very, very small shards of metal. These are tiny, about this --> l <-- in size or smaller.
Is this a problem? Jw |

Thin slivers are normal, too ... probably from a bearing!
