I did a dumb thing...
Well; I scored a 1976 911s in December of 2006.. I bought it and drove it 1 mile to heated indoor stroage in Denver COlorado (very dry climate).
Well; I expected to pick it up in spring and drive it but never did.. and it sat all summer and in fact all the way to today Dec 4th 2007. I didnt do ANY prep on it.. read DUMB. Now I moved to North Carolina and I had the car picked up to be trailered here today.. my driver (I own the transport company) said she smoked like a mosquito fogger and never stopped while he loaded it.. It never smoked when I test drove it 2 times and one time was a cold start in Dec 2006... So.. What happened most likely? I am afraid to see the responses... I am hoping this was oil leaking past the rings and it will just burn off in 10 minutes.. but I am afraid its not that simple.. Relax JP. Have a leakdown and compression tests done on the car when you get it home. I imagine you'll need some fresh gas in it to. Plugs might be crudded up. Just relax and see what you've got and proceed from there. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you. :)

Seems like this happens a lot. If you search "smoke" and Early_S_Man as the author, you will find some info about oil collecting in the HE's and muffler and how to get it out. The oil in the cylinders has burned off already. Too bad your driver couldn't winch the car so you could have used some preventative measures beforehand.
But, for the most part, these are pretty tough engines and will survive something like this. |
Go drive the car.
My engine sat for a couple years before finally being installed. It smoked quite a bit on decel, but the more I drove it, the less it smoked. |
Drive it, watch the smoke gradually disappear and post a pic of your new, immaculate ride.
And if that's the most dumbass thing you'll ever do w/ these cars, you've got most of us here beat by a mile! |

Well she should be here friday along with my 69' which smokes badly as well but that one I think needs valve guides.. but with the posts here I am tempted to drive that one for a bit and see if the smoke subsides... It runs GREAT and has lots of power for a 2.2 but smokes really bad on decel. Another question... the 76' has mobil one in it.. is synthetic less susceptible to acidic buildup as opposed to conventional petroleum based oil? |

I had the same thing happen to a car I picked up. Hadn't been driven in years. I had to get to some backroads via some fairly busy suburban roads. Oh man was I hated on when I did that. Horns, bright lights, upraised middle fingers, the works.
Or at least I assume that's what they were doing - I couldn't see ***** in my mirrors other than a big black cloud. Nonetheless, half an hour of flogging later, it was cleaned out. Where in NC did you end up? |

as you may know, these cars have a dry sump oil system, which means it has an oil tank and not a traditional oil pan like your typical Chevy. Over time of non-use, the oil seeps down from the tank and makes it way into the engine. Just like my British motorcycles did and still do. Just run it. Put in some Techron with some fresh gas and drive it. Then TAKE BETTER CARE OF IT!!!:D |

yeah...my car sat for 2 months, and when i started it up it i smoked up my friends garage and attached apt....needless to say he was a little pissed. ;) 5-10 mins later it was starting and running smoke free.

remember to exit the area immediately...run it like a dog......and return a better P-owner....with happy neighbors.

I left my 87' 3.2 for over 1yr and when I returned, I jump started it and let it warm up. It was as though I never left it. It still runs like a finely tuned sewing machine.

Thats why my car is called "Smoke". But it is always a temporary thing.
