Great news Juan!
I am sure this is the way for you to go!
You have invested so much time as well as $ into the car and she really did look 'Peach!'.
It was riding in your car that has pushed me to look into upgrading to a Turbo.
Looking foward to hearing more good news from you!

Juan:

I am happy to hear that the insurance company is taking care of you. The current plan sounds like the most expeditious way to get the car back on the road. However, from what you described, ...."pushed almost to the middle," makes me wonder if you wouldn't come out with a better car and some left over parts, read: money in your pocket, if you found a roller to transplant your parts into.

I personally feel most comfortable when I can either do or supervise work that I thouroughly understand. I do thouroughly understand metal and its limitations to undergo stress and the resultant fatigue. Probably the areas that would be straightened are not in critical areas that would later be subject to failure even during hard track use. If your mother of "all shops" is familiar with race car construction, this may be an opportunity to significantly improve the already stalwart chassis. Grab this "opportunity" for real chassis improvement.

Juan: Great news! Glad to hear you're not totalled.

One word of advice: Talk to the adjuster about reduced resale value. Your car is worth less on the open market after it's been hit, and you deserve compensation for that. Bruce Anderson claimed a 15 - 20% reduction in market values for cars that had been hit, so check into it.

Unhappy

I am with Diverdan on this one...I would consider picking up a roller and performing a transplant.

I faced a similar situation a few years ago. My bodyshop and insurance company worked out the estimates for repair and decided to repair the car instead of totalling it. After seeing the estimates for repair, I decided to purchase another car and transplant the best parts. I was also able to get a new paint job and some nice upgrades. Have you priced new fenders, hoods, oil coolers, etc lately? If you pick up a complete roller, you will be money ahead.

If you don't go this route, I would sell the car as soon as it comes out of the bodyshop. If the damage is as extreme as you describe, will you ever be comfortable pushing it hard? How about those strange creaks that will develop and that strange tire wear and why does this pull to the left?

Here is one I didn't put back together after a friend of mine got hit in a similar situation (BTW, this is why you don't let friends drive your cars!)

Good news, Juan. Hey, if there's any engine damage, maybe you can get them to put a V-8 engine in it!
regards,
jlex.
