I'm looking for a chassis but I need to know if there is a differance, and what is it, between the early 911s and the 912s. There will be major mods either way but I still want to make my non-sunroof 73RS and looking for some options.

Adam,
No difference in the shell, per se, but the different instruments, wiring harness, no anti-roll bars and solid-disk brakes make the 912 an expensive/troublesome base for a high-performance project to start with! And, all but the '69 and '76 were short-wheelbase models. ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Also I noticed this past weekend that the 912 does not have an oil tank on the right side on the engine bay. Which if giving F-6 power would need an oil tank. The 912 used two different F-4 engines which use the regular oil sump and needed no seperate oil tank.
This particular 912 I saw was in a VW junkyard shop getting a VW Type 1 engine installed!!! The owner got it cheap with no motor and decided to put in a low buck engine. Not to say that this was a nice 912, but it was not that bad. It clearly had rust issues and a bad reapint with Enkie mesh wheels and fiberglass "S" bumpers in front and rear. The guy should of at least splurged and gone with type 4 power which was on the '76 912. I almost feel bad for the guy with this fast looking car and a 50HP single carb VW type 1 engine... I'm actually looking to use most of the suspension components from my dammaged 78 car to put on the RS project should it happen so aslong as the body is the same, I assume that everything else will go on fairly easy.
As for the engine, I never though that there would be a problem. I assumed that I could even use the same sheet metal. Any more info would be great... keep it comming Adam Roseneck ------------------ 1978 911SC 3.0 roseneck@cyberbeach.net |

Adam:
Look for a '69 -'73, 911 roller to put your '78 parts on. Listen to Warren. The pre '69 912s were short chassis cars & you don't want one of those to stick your '78 parts on. ------------------ Marv Evans '72 911E |

As the owner of a '66 912, I agree with Warren-stick to looking for a '69 or later chassis-longer wheelbase does make a difference. If you like the looks of the early, "long-hood" cars (I do), try to pick up an early '70's car-remember, '74 was the first year for new style bumpers and "short" hoods. 911 and 912 chassis are identical save for motor mounts being in the rear corners of the engine compartment, while 912's are about 2/3 of the way back on the sides-and, of course, 912's don't have oil tanks-but the chassis indentations are there. Sheetmetal, glass, interior, electrical, suspension are all interchangeble for same year 911/912's-for up or back-dating, swapping complete assemblies (such as the entire front suspension) is the most logical soloution. It's true it's not easy making a true high-performance vehicle out of an early car-most of the really good aftermarket and factory parts fit much easier on the later cars-but, the early cars are usually easier to afford, and you can have a really fun classic car for street driving and autocrossing with just a little work. By the way, I'm putting a VW Type 1 engine in my 912-it came with one when I bought it, it fits with almost no fabricating, parts are MUCH easier to find and a HELL of a lot cheaper than 356/912 engine parts-and the 2500cc, dual-carbed, hydraulic-cammed stroker I'm building will put out an easy 160+hp all day long-for less than a STOCK rebuild on a 356/912 flat four. To each his own...
