901 shifter rebuild started.
Just finished the coupler replacement on my 70T and will tackle the shifter ball socket and rod bushing. At first I thought, looking at the schematic in my Haynes manual, that I will have to disassemble the entire shifter to get "down there" but it stays in one piece I guess. I also read the shifter improvements section in "101 Projects..." Anything inside the shifter I should look at?
My plan is to get a Seine System shifter with a 915 base after I have made these improvements. I am just not loving the 1st gar dogleg and the "guess which gear I'm in" action. Ulrich |
Good progress so far. Two questions:

If you are removing the bushing, just remove it any way you like. Use very hot water to soften the new one before installing. If you want to R & R an existing one, you could use a heat gun gently.

Do what we plumbers do. Put a slice in it (relief cut), don't cut into the metal though! Then simply peel away.
To install the new piece I've heated up the bracket and put the bushing into the freezer for a few minutes, grease the outer area and apply force to get it in. New bushings on a 910 shifter helps wonders. Good Luck |
