I just finished repainting my '83 911SC, and it was a lot easier than I thought it would be. I used Glasurit System 22, which is expensive--about $575 a gallon when you include the necessary catalyst and thinner--but the beauty of it is that it's a pint that you literally sand to finish it, with 1,200- to 2,000-grit wet paper, then a rubbing compound and finally a polishing glaze. Makes for a fantastic finish, if you do the proper prep and priming (which may well be the most important part of any paint job). Because the paint is sandable, any mistake you make--a run, say--can simply be sanded out and you try again. I disassembled the car entirely and took all the glass out to paint it, and it did it in pieces--the hood, the doors, the hatch, the bumpers, the basic body, etc.--and it took a long time and a lot of effort. I also did it in very primitive surroundings--a lot of it outdoors, some of it in my barn--so there were more than a few bugs and dust motes I had to sand out and re-do. I wouldn't recommend doing this job yourself if you're in any hurry or think you're going to tape and spray the whole car in a weekend, if you have no experience painting. If you have a summer to do the job, aren't in a hurry and are doing a restoration project, you can do it.

I had my 84 3.2 fully repainted in arctic silver. However I have no idea what type of paint the workshop used. All I know is that the car looks perfect now
![]() If you go as far as to fully repaint your 911 it really should be a top quality job. Don't compromise. Just my opinion of course. |

I am contemplating a re paint of my 85 coupe also. I have recieved quotes from 3000 to 6500 for same color (brown mettalic) re paint. Problem is around here they dont want your car till late spring early summer because of all the insurance repair work. I have small shop with paint booth, and am familiar with epoxy primers, base coat top coat systems. Just never dissasembled, painted and reassembled car before. I am assuming it would take me a couple hundred hours of my time and a thousand bucks in materials. Am I close? Also I have read in the archives here that many people have striped car to bare metal. Shops I have talked to say they wont go down to the bare metal unless they have to. They say the factory surface prep (primer) is best left alone.
