Question Lighter P cars

Hey just a quick question?
Why are the earlier cars so much lighter and faster then the SC's and Carreras?
Was it just bumpers and EPA crap?
Hmmm I dont know!

Let's see there's:

crash bumpers
A/C
Aluminum instead of Magnesium for many engine parts
power brakes
aluminum trans. instead of Magnesium
electric windows
etc. etc. etc.

So then why did porsche go to Alum instead of staying with Mag?
Cheaper?
Or is Aluminum Silicon Alloy stronger?

The SC engine is basically a 930 turbo engine without the turbo. They used aluminum for strength and stiffness. No more pulled head studs and warping cam covers etc. More horsepower= more heat. More heat=more stress and warping. The trans of course had to handle more torque from the ever increasing displacement that was necessary to move the heavier, more luxuriously appointed later cars. It is kind of a vicious circle with the weight increases.

Aluminium was need to handle the torque of the bigger mortors. The mag. cases were at there limit for the amount of HP they would make and live. An aluminium case is more ridgid and the more ridgid the case is means that the crank can spin freely.
