Odometer Stopped Working

Had a clicking sound behind the dash. Did some research here, pushed the reset button on the mileage counter, and tested but the clicking noise remained. Pulled the nylon connector containing various wires from the mileage counter, tested, and the clicking noise is gone but the odometer stopped working. Plugged the nylon connector back in, tested, clicking noise returns but the odometer still does not work. Objective is no clicking sound and a working odometer. Seems like I read in a search that the mileage counter and the odometer are not tied together. Can anyone confirm? Any thoughts on what may have caused the odometer to suddenly stop?

I had to replace the gear also. It was very easy and don't let anyone tell you to have someone else do it. Do it as soon as possible so that you don't lose track of your mileage. The old gear seems to melt in your hand when you touch it.

Mine pretty much fell apart in my hand also.
