I had bought one as well thinking it must be possible without droping the motor... I ended up deciding that none looked better, was roomier and certainly nicer than a replacement torn in 3 places at that point already... However others on the board seem to have succeded......... If the motor is coming out anytime soon I'd wait till then.

It is possible to do this with the engine in. I did it, but I don't recommend it. I did not find it to be an enjoyable experience and had to use many long screwdrivers and long wooden dowels to get it in place. Like Jean-Paul said, if you are planning to remove the engine anytime soon, I would wait until then. Otherwise, arm yourself with some dowels and streach your back and legs well. Maybe some Flexeril and Ibuprofen for back pain after you are done.

Nick.

if you lower engine down 6-8" on a jack, disconnecting whatever wires and hoses that would get stretched, you'll have enough room.

85 Coupe:
when you removed yours altogether - how easy was it to get rid of all the glue underneath?

I'm considering removing mine (not replacing - I enjouy the F6-sound! ), but I'm hesitant since I don't know how troublesome it will be to clean up underneath..
I have the engine out at this time, so I figured now's the time to do it...

Tried that - found nothing of relevance unfortunately. So anyone who's removed the sound blanket is hereby encouraged to speak out

Cool

Removed the Sound Blanket in my 914.
Used Acetone to Remove the Glue very time consuming. Acetone also removes the Grease and paint. But I intended on Repainting the
Compartment. Must Use a Resperator when working with this stuff and Safety Glasses.

hey ed,
ck the tech article on this website. i followed it with lasting results 2 years later. the pad has remained in place and looks great. definitly use the 3m glue pp recommends and a heavy weight paper template before installing the real one. just be careful with the cuts around the hinges. it is a very easy job without dropping the engine. of course i have an older 911 with less "stuff" to get in the way.

just rip it out, scrape off remains with a putty knife and scrub with a wire brush. it doesn't look real nice afterwards, but it's louder.

Yea- I replaced mine here a while back. I took the engine out before I saw that I needed to replace it. I scraped most of the old glue off with a putty knife and sanded off the rest with 80 grit sandpaper then I painted the cleaned seat back with rustoleum. I brushed on a 3M contact adhesive onto the seat back and also on to the fiber sound mat. After about 5 minutes drying time I carefully pressed the mat in place where it bonded instantly. Then I bent the tabs back around it. Acually, after cleaning the seatback, I think some of that newly made insulation with a metalic backing might be a better choice than the old style mat.

Thanks Guys. Removing the old mat does not appear to be a big problem, it has turned to dust, and the fire wall is, what parts I can see, is rather clean. Wire brush should do it.

Had a local P friend show me how to do a partial engine drop. Should work ok.
