Red face Wastegate question. Help!

I am in the process of upgrading my manual boost controller (dial-a-death) to an electronic controller.

When I removed the manual boost controller it had one hose connected to the intercooler and one to the top of the wastegate. Since I removed the hoses, I have an open tube on the top of the wastegate. I’m going to be driving the car for a while before I install the new electronic controller, do I need to plug the tube on the wastegate?

Why not leave the manual control in until your ready for the electronic unit?

Personally, I have seen ZERO gain in using the electronic units. I have owned three hot rod turbos and ALL fared better with the manual. One was a 600 HP Turbo Buick. I installed HSK's boost controller to and lost power!!! And I did not feel any "safer" about my motor. It was a waste of money. Of course those selling them or those that have wasted the money might tell you otherwise...

If you leave the hose off, what's controlling the waste gate (and thus boost pressure)?

It sounds like you should leave the manual boost controller ON or connect the intercooler hose back up to the wastegate unless you want to experiment with the effects of maximum boost.

Hammer,

I just finished upgrading my Turbo and Exhaust system. Removed the wastegate and it was connected the same way. One tube (I think the top) was connected to the intercooler, the side tube (I think it is to bleed the pressure out of the valve so it can close) was not connected at all. I think your gate is hooked up properly.

I will be installing a electronic controller also (the box is sitting in the garage). I thought I would drive it for a while with the new modifications before I hook up the control unit. Let me know how your install goes, I don't mind mechanical stuff but I get a little up tight about the electrical stuff.

Best of luck, Todd

If you leave the wstegate line open, you will overboost on acceleration and melt your pistons. either reconnect the manual controller or plug the line to the intercooler line.
