How many shims do I need to buy.

Parts explosion shows two

People tell me it depends. I thought it was 6.

Please help

A total of 6 are needed and the positioning of the shims is used to adjust the tension on the alternator belt.

Ditto. You must always have a total of six. Depending on your belt and other factors, it may take any combination of the six shims in front of and behind the pulley half in order to achieve the proper belt tension. The tightest tension will be with no bushings between the pulley and the fan. The loosest will be with all of the shims between the pulley and the fan.

Just as an example, my belt requires no shims between the pulley and the fan. All of them are therefore between the pulley and the tightening nut.
