Park Brake Tension?

I have about 1/2" Play in my P-Brake handle before I feel tension. Does this sound right? or should it be firm from the moment you push in the button to the point it holds the brake in place? I only say this because I accidentally drove about 2-3 miles, managed to get on the freeway and noticed the P-brake was slightly engaged, so I thought I might of damaged something and couldn't recall where or if there is supposed to be any slack.

Don't push the button in when you pull on the handle.
Count the clicks in the ratchet when you pull; 3-5 clicks is about right.
At 5 clicks, the brake should hold the car when on a hill.
