3.2 hanging throttle

So Marcus' 1988 Euro clubsport developed an annoying and intermittent habit of not coming down the idle when the throttle is closed gently. Think coming to rest at a stoplight. The idle hangs around 2000 - 2500 rpm.

I thought I fixed it when I found the throttle body very very loose on the manifold - Hey problem solved ! But no, it's never the obvious, after a short test drive it was apparent that the problem was still there and the rattling throttle body was having no affect on peformance ?!?

I popped the decklid during a hanging idle event, and verified that the throttle arm was dead against it's stop - confirming that this is defintely not a linkage issue. A very light application of pressure to the throttle arm, towards it's stop, and boom - nice even 800 rppm idle.

So, I'm guessing the microswitch which makes when the throttle closes is flaky - easy enough to swap out I'd think...but nope. The microswitch is riveted to (working from memory here) the frame which holds the throttle linkage together.

Has anybody dealt with this issue already?

Sorry - can't get any pics up because the car's not close to my camera.

Jasper, the TPS is easy to test, I think Markus has one of my manuals that shows the test. Other wise I would guess it is the ICV. There is also a test in the manual for that. Even if it passes the test, remove it and clean it with some brake clean, dry it thouroughly and re install.

What happens if the throttle is snapped close as opposed to being done "gently" ?

I missed his call tonight, but I guess I know what it was about now!!

Cheers

Hey Jeff - what's the ICV?

As far as behaviour on snap close goes...I don't remember if I tested that. Fact is the last time I looked at this issue was last spring or something. I seem to recall that the problem occured on a soft throttle close only...key point being that activating the microswitch manually, by pushing the throttle closed would drop the idle. I think the snap close resulted in normal idle.

Marcus was calling for another reson. He needs some info on that cradle we used to drop the engine last time. We're planning to drop the engine again to solve the leaking oil cooler problem. It's leaking like a bastard, either from bad seals (I don't think so) or a ruptured oil passage (that's what happened to me once). The plan is to put 10 psi air into it and listen for leaks. Maybe rig up a pressure guage to watch the leakdown.

Anyway - we'll be in touch as the project progresses.

BY THE WAY - My 996 is for sale because I'm moving to England. Are you interested ?

cheers

England? when is that happening. I may be interested in the car...

Okay, I think the TPS is adjustable, I need to check my manual or look on Jorian's car this weekend when I drop the motor this weekend.

The ICV (idle control valve) it looks like a small tube shaped thing with an electrical connector and two hoses. It allows air to bypass the throttle.

I would suspect a quick adjustment on the TPS should solve it.

I doubt the seals are leaking, they were new when we replaced them....

The jack adapter is available anytime, except this weekend as I will be using it at Jorians...

Cheers

Hey maybe Marcus and/or I will swing by Jorian' for a chat n' chew. I'll bring the 996 so you can peruse it. I didn't know you'd changed the oil cooler seals - guess that rules that out. Sounds like Marcus needs a new oil cooler. Happens to the best of us. Hope to see you this weekend.
