Help me trouble shoot breaks.

I did not drive my car for 4 days. When I got in the (1988 911) car this morning the breaks felt a bit soft and the peddle went down a farther than it had 4 days ago to engage the breaks. I'm not loosing break fluid and my break pad sensor is not on. If I pump the breaks before I come to a stop they come back. What could it be?

The Master Cylinder is basically a piston that is pushed through a cylinder when you depress the brake pedal pressurizing the brake fluid which pushes the brake caliper pistons out (putting pressure on the rotors). If the seal around the master cylinder piston is letting fluid bypass it will not leak out of the master cylinder but it will not allow the master cylinder to build up pressure like it used to. This will make it so that you have to push the brake pedal further or pump it to build up the pressure it used to before the seal started letting fluid bypass.
Hope this helps,
Shawn

Not on a 88. The brake MC is in the trunk attached to the brake booster.

Start with bleeding the brakes, then move on to the master cylinder. If you're not exactly sure what the problem is, start with the cheapest possible solution. Plus, after you've done it twice after discovering it was the M/C after all, you'll be a pro and amaze all your friends.

Do not know if this info is of any value. But if I put my foot on the break with a little pressure with the car off. When I start the car the peddle drops and looses firmness. Break booster? Vacuum?

I think that it is called hooked on phonics not dyslexia. I also suffer with this disorder. I use a dictionary a lot.

Taken from American Heritage Dictionary: Dyslexia (n.)----Impairment of the ability to read.

I am not a medical expert (or play one on TV) but the basic problem is the wrong choice of words. Breaks & peddle are homonyms of brakes & pedal respectively, and for someone who could compose the above reply is by no means close to being a dysletic (n) or dyslexic (adj). Just my two-cents.

Cool

So. spell check doesn't work with dyslexia?
Imagine how it feels for an Immigrant to learn a complete new language and function with it.

Porch, Fuches, Valence, breaks, peddle....it's fun.

Back to the topic:
SMC: How long ago were your breaks serviced?
I mean caliper rebuild etc, not just new pads.
How old is the Master?
There is a lot of info on this board regarding soft peddle, do a search under brakes.
Quite frankly, brakes on a 911 are about the easiest to look after; it's fairly straight forward unlike many of the other maintenance issues on a 911.
And yes, with pressure on the pedal, you will feel the pedal drop when the engine starts because now the vacuum booster activates.
I favour a complete brake job because it gives you peace for many years: Caliper rebuild, new rotors, pads, master, rubber lines if they are old.

Randy: That's a good one; you must have a special 911.
Wil: Good thing you went for cover.

One quick note about the spelling. It doesn't help anyone that is searching for a particular word, in this case "brakes", when it is mis-spelled in threads. So, Wil isn't really nit-picking, there is validity to his criticism.

Exactly.

And on ebay, if I'm looking for a brake pedal and I find someone listing a break peddle or petal, I may be the only one bidding. good for me, bad for the seller.

There is a program sold, to check for misspelled word searches for the on-line auctions, BBS, etc. Gotta love the free enterprise system. Someone will certainly find a way to make a buck on others screw-ups.
