Rear brakes cotter pin?
I just replaced my rear brake pads on my '79 SC and found that there seem to be a cotter pin on each of the brake pad retaining clip pins. There is a small hole drilled into the pin for the cotter pin to sit in.
Is this supposed to be there? On the front there are no cotter pins, and the retainer pins should be held in place by friction since they need "nailed" into the caliper body. Any insights would be great! Thanks! ------------------ Adrian Pillow 1979 911 SC 1966 VW Microbus PCA - Peachstate Region |

There are actually special clips that are used to hold the pins in place although I don't see any reason why a cotter pin wouldn't work. I would just replace them with new ones.

it's supposed to have a clip that looks like a bent bobby pin. also used on front hood gas shocks. some thing dependable needs to be there so the pin doesn't fall out. fronts have a split ring tension collar that keeps them in place.

Pillow,
A cotter pin would probably be more secure as a temporary measure! The clips are called 'Safety Eyes' in the parts catalog, but are not a separate replaceable part. They are, fortunately, included in the Ate rebuild kits for the calipers, and I have several extras from past rebuilds. Check your email, and send me your address, and I will send you four. They appear to be stainless steel, and it would take a real BUFFOON to 'lose' or throw them away! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Just got all renewed last fall (it's a '76).
All front calipers have the "new Design" Pins with an elastic metal end for securing. These have to be tapped in. All rear calipers have the "old design" pins with the cotter pin (didn't know this word before) for securing. They are produced like this by ATE and others, sold also by the Porsche dealers. I think this at least applies for all post '73 models up to the Carrera 3.2. Jens |
