Question Leather or leatherette?

How can I tell if the seats in my Carrera are leather or leatherette, short of cutting into them with a knife, to see the grain? I took the option codes off the hood panel and checked them in the Red Book, and none of them were related to leather.

Surely with a bit of straining and twisting you can get under the bottom of the seat and take a peak at the material at the edges.
I can't remember ever sitting in a car w/ leatherette interior that could be mistaken for real leather texture.
If you can find a raw edge under the seat somewhere, you should be able to spot the fabric backing right away. Leather is not fabric backed.
If you have a bit of money to spend you can buy a "leatherette-detector" from the company listed below.

I don't think many late 80's carreras came with vinyl seats, at least not in the US. Some came with "full leather" which meant leather door panels, dash, rear seats, etc., but it seems they all came at least with "partial leather" i.e. front seats only.

The fact that you are even remotely unsure means to me that you have leather seats. If you had vinyl, you'd know it, in my opinion.

Heat up a needle. It will melt through (an inconspicuous piece of) vinyl. It won't melt leather.

Put some leather conditioner on it. The leather will soak it up, the vinyl will just allow it to sit. Either way it can't hurt anything.
How does the leather detector work anyway?

They also had leather faced seats. The rest of the seat was leatherette.

Mrdi:

The leather detector moos when the real thing is detected.

I saw it on Speedvision last Saturday in a Ron Popiel ad! Really worthwhile piece of equipment. Ranks right up there with the pocket fisherman!
