Hi all,
I just got the word from the shop, my trans is gone. I have a 1980SC engine and trans to match. I dont want to miss any oporitunity to "upgrade" to something better if posible but no nothing about transmisions and need some direction. What should I expect to pay for a new trans? What is a resonable price for install? Is there anything else that should be replaced while its out? Clutch? Thanks, Kenneth carwrecks.org |

I'd talk to Gilbert at Vertex in Florida. They have rebuilt transaxles with a one-year warranty at very low prices. If it's possible, you might want to try to get a 72-75 915 with the lower 7:31 ring an pinion, although that would require some other changes to fit.

Kenneth,
Make that a '72-'74 915 with 7:31 ring & pinion! You would need a cable-driven speedo, unless you get the early 915 converted to the electronic sender, and that is $200-$300 higher! ------------------ Warren Hall 1973 911S Targa |

Are the main shafts in the early 915 tranny’s weaker than the 1980 and newer? Perhaps I am wrong about the date but I do believe there was a strength “upgrade” later in the 915s life.

if a trans runs out of oil and galls all the gears, then it's considered "gone". otherwise they are generally rebuildable. a used trans may need to be rebuilt too. $500-$800 is average used price. if you buy a rebuilt unit they may not accept your bad core.

I think that some of the suggestions mentioned here are just that, suggestions. I have never driven an early R&P tranny so I have no input. Check out how the driving is actually affected by going with the early trans. and then make the decision if that suits your style of driving.
If you are really looking for an UPgrade, look into the G50. You can either go with the short bellhousing from a place like Patrick Motorsports (add in Excellence) or do the work and convert to a standard G50. Either way is MUCH more expensive than a rebuild or used early tranny though. The improvments (I believe) would be extreme. My two cents.
