Let's see... 917/30, 934, RSR, 968RS, GT1...can u guess where you are?
I had the good fortune of meeting Matt Drendel and his head honcho Bryan Caldwell at Renn III, who just so happened to live in my home state. They are both down to earth, amazing guys, and invited me to swing by and see Matt's 'small collection' if i were ever in the vicinity of Hickory, NC. Well, the girlfriend and i decided to road trip to Ashville and the mountains this week and i took him up on the offer. It was simply surreal and awe inspiring to be in the presence of these machines... all of them with major race-win histories (except the 917/30). Matt used to race 996's in the AMLS series before a back injury put him out of action, and his 'chief' Bryan was equally gracious. Even my girlfriend was impressed. The total collection included the cars seen, as well as a 935 qne 962 (barely seen) and a race version of the 959, which i must have not photoed because i was in such shock in general. enjoy

juicersr,
I've done business with Matt's father Franks company and have been to see various items from their collections including the 917/30. They were in an airplane hanger or two, but I beleive the SOX police may have clarified the dividing line between business and personal ownership and some have moved. They've got a nice collectioons of planes, including the Lear I went down on, and have a good history of Ferrari Challenge racing too. FYI, if you poke around you can find some transactional history on the sale of the 917/30 and the numbers are staggering. Last time I was there they had an Enzo still with the window sticker on it. Some guy offered a fortune to buy it and they were going to part with it before it ever hit the road.

Hey Fidalgo, ur a winner! PM me your address and brewski choice and i send to ya...
Yeah, he purchased that F1 motor at Rennsport. The whole visit was surreal... to see only one of four 968RS Turbos in the world, not to mention having just read about it in Excellence a few issues ago, was crazy. I really got to take a good look at the details of the 2.1 RSR turbo carrera, which is my personal favorite. You can tell this beast was put together by a bunch of fanatical speed freaks before the days of sterile factory race shops and sanitized everything. Rough, hand-made details are everywhere. The fiberglass rough but functional, some of the gauges in the interior look like they came straight from an old U-boat or local hardware store, and even the sheetmetal looks like it was cut out by hand from stock. there is no CAD stuff anywhere. True old-school hot rodding in the spirit of all of us 911 loving Pelicanites

Lucky man juicersr !
Having seen those cars at RRI, RRII and RRIII I've often wondered what type of place they are stored in. Nice to see it looks like a regular garage ... only thing missing are some drops of oil on the floor ![]()
