Porsche Crest 996 rear suspension uppgrade

Hallo!
Is here anyone that have done a 996 rear suspension conversion on there older 911? (911sc -79)
I´m going to pick up my 996 suspension in the end of next week on it would be great to have some hint from someone that have done this conversion before i begin to cut in my car.
I have done some measurements and it don't seem that hard to make it fit.

I never even knew you could do that! Im assuming you get an "upgrade" of some sorts with the suspension. Thanks for posting. when you get started, please post some pics here, I would love to see the progress.

This sounds interesting. You could try a search for "impossible". Absolutely keep us posted on how you progress.

I think you are going to have to go tube frame? What will you do for uprights and axles?

Is this for a track car or a street car? For a track car you'll want to stiffen the 996 suspension up so that it doesn't move around as much.

Kelly Moss has some images of a 933 rear into an early car on their site. Matt Lawrence has done it as well, as have quite a few others.

I'm personally not totally convinced that the late version rear suspensions are a significant advantage on a track car. There are many who swear by them, but from what I can see it seems you can modify an early trailing arm suspension to have a very similar camber curve, etc over a relatively narrow range of suspension travel. The early car can't duplicate the "weissach effect" but track cars often pin the axles to eliminate that anyway, and they also run stiffer springs which reduces total suspension travel. I'll admit I may not fully understand the advantages, though.

the 993 and 996 almost look a like. 993 have 4 bolt in the tub and the 996 have 6 bolt up in the tub.
Im going to use 996 upprigts and also 996 axels or do you talk about clearance
Why do you think i have to build a tubframe? Its not that hard to modify the old subframe? (rambalkarna)

here is some that put a 993 suspension on a older tub done here un sweden http://persson.st/nick/techpic/996susp.html
thay made it some harder for them self than thay have to do...on thay seem to missed out how the 993 suspension works (wrong weel base)

I'll post some graphs I did some time back to illustrate why I'm not sure about the cost and complexity of going to a 993 or 996 rear suspension. I've overlaid the camber and toe curves for a 993, 964 and 911 (obviously one can change the static camber and toe, so this is just to compare the shapes and slopes of the curves).
I've also modeled what happens to the rear toe if you move the inside pickup for the trailing arm up by 1" relative to the outboard pickup (as one can do with camber boxes). With that modification it seems to me that statically, at least, the 911 starts to look a lot like a 993 over a limited range. Dynamically, ie with the weissach link, it will be different, but then as I said that's often locked out for racing use?

I was thinking you will half to modify the 996 axels on the inboard side but if you can do this level of fab it wont be a problem. AI thought all of the 993 suspension conversions were essentially tube frame. My bad.
