Chezzy or Neat Idea?

I was looking at my Porsche the other night checking all my lights to make sure no bulbs where out and had an idea of maybe illuminating the rear center deflector showing Porsche, had anybody done this and if so is it hard to do, not a good look?? I want to hear from everybody before I think about starting this little winter project?

Illumination of Rear Reflector.......

I had thought of this idea many years ago and still do. The clearance behind the reflector is not that much and finding the right illumination is the challenge. I believe this is a doable project.

Our host sells one, PEL-LD-1NEW.

It's the only black-lettered replacement reflector (that reads "Porsche") available, AFAICS.

OMG.

My 911 doesn't say "Porsche" anywhere. No hood crest. No lettering on the engine lid. I even use the Momo horn button, and leave the button with the Porsche crest sitting on the shelf.

The car is distinctive enough. I figure if anybody needs to be told that it's a Porsche, they don't care.

I will tell you what I was going to try... remove reflector. carefully remove the painted surface from the lettering only on back of reflector. you might want to recoat the rest of the reflector to make sure it is light impermeable. purchase a planar backlight from a electronic supply place. i think if you look around, you can find one about the right size. these backlights are what they use for LCD screens to light them up, and are nice because they are thin, low voltage, and evenly distributed light across the whole thing; meaning no hotspots you would see from using bulbs. I have not got the point of figuring out exactly how to power it yet, but I do not think it would be hard to do.

anyway, that is my idea... good luck!

For even lighting that will fit in a thin space look at electro luminescent panels. They have really low current requirements so I would be quite doable.

Since you asked, Chezzy! I would expect to see something like that done on 'Pimp My Ride'

Komenda Fan 12-16-2007 01:49 PM

Dantilla, I like your approach. I might follow suit. If I swap out the original lid for a duck tail, it will just be the hood crest and horn button left, and i have been eying up replacement horn buttons already.

I'm looking for an adjective...is "swissy" a word :)?

ps: It's your car, do what ya want to...

Apparently some cars have this.

There was a thread on rennlist talking about his.

Maybe not Chezzy, but possibly cheesy.

RarlyL8 12-16-2007 05:08 PM

The non-black letter reflectors may lend themselves a bit better to being back lit.

Really Cheesy. And it's a REFLECTOR.

You bored?

Maybe you could ask this august group for worhwhile cosmetic projects for your car.

Cheesy.

I think it would be difficult to keep all the letters equally lit, too on a modified stock reflector. If you look at the back of a reflector, the center of the reflector has two prongs in the center that are backed by about a 2" wide piece of plastic. I haven't looked at the back of one in a while, but I think the same setup exists at the two ends, too. Absent cutting out the center supports, I think it would be difficult to have the center letters lit the same as the other letters.

Why not add a wing?

RarlyL8 12-17-2007 11:30 AM

All kidding aside, the 2 end sections on the non-black reflector (pictured above) with lights added gives a bit more brake light for the guy behind you to see.
I wouldn't light up the "PORSCHE" like a Budwiser sign in a tavern window though, that's not so good.

mack6820 12-17-2007 01:39 PM

I did it. I think it looks alright but Im sure the purists wont like it. let me see if I can put up a pic.
