Is this Weber part necessary ?

What does this tube do ? Is it to prevent frothing of the fuel in the float chamber ?:

Can it be removed without causing any problems (46 IDA's don't have this tube) ?

I want to fit the mesh screens over this area like this:

Float-bowl vent.

Jon is correct, it is the float bowl vent.

There is more. For racing the screen prevents track debris from landing on the air correction jets. The tall tube prevents the float chamber boil-over from landing on the air correction jets. In either case the mixture is screwed up – big time.

I have my race 46IDAs set with the long tubes through the screens. Porsche didn’t do this. I did eventually.

If you do a Pelican Search on my name and ‘Riverside’, you will find I had a major fire in my 914-6 at a USRRC driver’s school event. Back on track the next morning but lesson learned.

I can offer significant suggestions. Feel free to contact me.

Best,
Grady
