You've really got me wondering what gears I've got in this car. Doesn't sound stock. My 4th and 5th are pretty close. Tire hieght is the same as Jack. I'm going to tear it down in a month or so to replace those god-forsaken synchros. We'll see then. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/smile.gif

Warren, short gears are really fun for racing, but really suck on the interstate. You just can't have it all (unless you get a six speed!)

I can never figure out where I sit on this topic.

I mean, on one hand shorter gears are great, but it gets wearying at constant speeds. I have a more extreme version of all this with my other car, a Peugeot 106. It has (very) short gears (and a little engine - 1300cc) - 70mph = 4200rpm IF the speedo is correct. As a result you almost need earplugs for long distance travel. It does however rev to 7500 and sounds like a race car so there are some advantages http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif

But as a result I kinda enjoy driving the 911 which in my case has, I think, the first of the 8:31 r/p.

I am also curious as to which of the responders with the shorter gears:

a) need them (pre 74 cars with less torque)
b) have them as part of a weekend fun car (when, IMO, noise etc is less important)

The same question goes for the dual outlet exhaust.

Look at me talking about refinement - I must be getting old!!!!

I am thinking of reworking my tranny to make the ratios a bit shorter, particularly 4th. I have the 901 tranny that came stock in my 1969 "S".

1. Is the R&P a 7:31 already?
2. If so, aren't 7:37s pretty rare?
3. Where should I look for parts?
4. Expensive to have them made?
5. How much should the total rebuild be, with parts?
6. How much if I changed 4th too?

Thanks for any advice you have....
