When I take the oil cap off, the engine slows, like it's supposed to. I believe I do not have vacuum leaks.
With the oil cap on, and the engine running, I can place my hand over the oblong air intake at the filter cover/housing, and virtually nothing happens. There is some vacuum there, but not a lot. With this orifice essentially plugged, the engine virtually does not even slow down. Is my engine breathing through its ears? ------------------ '83 SC |

Of course it is - thats the very desirable DUAL INDUCTION system. Silly question.

If it wasn't raining -- I would go out and check for you, but you know that there a number of normal places for the engine to breath. Obviously, the oil tank through the appropriately named "Main Breather". There is supposed to be an 6mm orifice in this line probably to restrict air flow (my guess). This breathing circuit is the reason that it is so bad for you to overfill the oil tank. The breather comes in downrange from the aircleaner, but in front of the throttle plate. When the throttle plate gets oiled and causes poor running. My guess is that if you block off the intake, you may be forcing the engine to breath through the "main breather". Probably provides more then enough air for idle. If the breather hose was replaced perhaps the orifice was left out. From the schematic the idle speed control bypasses the throttle with a smaller diameter hose then the "main breather" hose.
