oil line cleaning?
I had some pitting on one cam lobe and I wanted to ensure that I track down the cause so I don't have to go through a canm replacement again. From what I can find here on the forum that potential causes are:
1) bad oil- that'll be fixed by using Brad Penn here on out 2) bad forging of cam- not a real likely cause since the pitting is so isolated, but the re-grind should confirm or exclude that problem 3) lack of oil flow to that lobe- casued by a clog in the line at that point. So, how do I ensure that is or is not the cause and then correct it? In order to properly clean the oil line that feeds the cam at the rockers, I'd have to pull the cam housing and then the oil line, neither of which I really want to do. I was hoping maybe someone here has some really slick method of verfiying the line is clear- maybe carburator cleaner spray injected through the line or compressed air? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated! Also, I cofimed with my local distributer that Brad Penn oil is going up in price 17 January- he did not know how much, but given the price has been steady for a couple of years while crdue oil prices have tripled or more, it stands to reason it will go up a good bit. Might want to beat the price increase! Best- Matt

You can run the car without the valve cover for a short time and watch it. I've done this with large (3'x4') oil drip pans underneath...
