I searched endlessly for this but could find absolutely nothing regarding this, so here goes. How much does a typical air cooled 911 head weigh? I would prefer the bare weight, but complete is ok too. Please mention the year/model if possible too, as I'm also interested in knowing if the weight changed significantly from the early years to the 993s. Thanks.

When I first read the topic, I thought, before or after the stryker and necropsy?

Getting off-topic (might as well seeing as how there has been no real response), I'm surprised to see a hardcore Mopar guy here. I happen to be one myself, although I've really started to become an air-cooled Porsche guy too. You've got a nice collection of B-series trucks. I've got a '52 B-3-B 108 myself, along with a '74 Challenger. I've always been envious of anyone with a F or higher tonnage model, I'd love to have one someday.

I don't have an answer, but I am curious why you're asking. They're all aluminum with roughly the same dimensions, so I wouldn't think there'd be much difference.

Well the actual weight of the head itself is my main interest, the difference in weight (if any) between the years is only of minor interest. The reason I'm interested in the weight is because I'd like to do some calculations regarding the heat dissipation capability of the head.

I guess you could get a VERY rough estimate from the weight, but without taking the fins and amount of cooling air into account the accuracy would be way off.

Aye, surface area would be what you need. WAG close to 2 square feet.

I'm aware of the importance of surface area. My username means what it implies. But what I need to know is the weight.

Yes, I have been a MOPAR driver since the late 60's and early 70's. I bought a new 1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440-6pack and raced NHRA, A-Stock for several years. I have also been into the German cars since the early 70's as well. I now have 9 different B-Series Dodge Trucks, 1948-1953yr models, 1/2 ton, 3/4 ton, panels, etc. all the way up to the B-1-F-152 1-1/2 ton dump body, this dump body truck was like opening a time capsule. I bought it from the original owners daughter. He died in 1974, then his son kept it on the cotton plantation, then he died, in, 2003, then the last remaining daughter, sold it to me a couple of years ago. It never had a license plate, or even a title, because back then, the state, did not title vehicles. This is a nice truck, about 40,000 miles, and the B-4-B is a another nice one. TOO MANY TOYS! Hope you will get the info for the heads. Tony.

3.2 head as above,
5.8 lbs. cylinder head, bare w/ new valve guide bushings (2,652g) Good luck - I hope you are using a distributed parameter model... that is a hairy task... |

TheMadScientist, I don't know where you are located, but I have people from all over the U.S. contact me about the B-Series Dodge Trucks. I know of a running B-1-F-152" 236.6 flathead 6, that is for sell right now, CHEAP$$$.

Thank you RWebb, it is greatly appreciated. No, I will not be using a distributed parameter model. For the level of accuracy I'm looking for a lumped parameter model is adequate.
