Wayne's 101 Projects
Wayne, thanks again for the book and this BBS. I knew that having my 83SC smog checked in SoCal was going to be an ordeal, as it always is.
Armed with the 101 Projects book and the vast knowledge of this BBS, I set a plan of action to replace the catalytic converter in the hopes of getting past the smog nazis. My 12 year old son and I replaced it during the Thanksgiving holiday, and I took the car to the local "Test Only" shop only to discover that my car failed the test. The results were slightly high in the CO category. After spending several hours researching the subject on this board, I determined that the O2 Sensor may not be fully functional. I found that the plastic/ceramic male housing had detiorated, and was not making full contact. I did some magic as recommended by this BBS and got it working. Using Wayne's book as a reference to locate the damn CIS mixture adjustment, I leaned the car out after taking it on a very rambunctious drive to heat it up. I quickly drove it to the nazi and had it tested. The car passed with flying colors! Thanks again to the wisdom and book, David |
waynes book is a vital tool to learning our 911's souls, wayne also deserves his 959 for his effort :)

Thanks guys. Just to recap the lesson here, high CO content means that the mixture is too rich. If you're not sure the car is going to pass, it's a good idea to have the mixture leaned out by a shop with a CO meter, prior to taking it to the test. Definitely worth the hassle. Also, a new catalytic converter with newer 2007 technology will flow much freer than the 25-year old units they used back then. Also, a new cat will "disguise" all sorts of engine running problems, and help you to pass...
Thanks for the kudos, you can return the favor by spreading the word about Pelican! -Wayne |
1. I used the forum to debug my very common problem with lights stuck in hi-beams.
2. I ordered replacement switch from Pelican store. 3. I used the 101 Projects book to instruct me how to remove the wheel and swap out the switch. Talk about vertical market lock-in ;) -Todd |
