On the edge about selling my 911SC
I am thinking about selling the SC. I find myself with to many cars and not enough time to drive them all. Plus the insurance rates in Massachusetts are a KILLER. My thought is to sell one of the 4 cars I have. And right now the SC seems like the best one to let go. My question where is the best place to sell the car? The us market for SC's seems pretty weak and when I search www.mobilie.de and the euro ebay sites I am amazed at what the same car would sell for overseas. Has anyone tried to advertise/market their car to the Euro market from the US?
The car is a euro car with no changes when it was imported in 1988. I have all of the epa/dot paperwork but there is little evidence anything was changed from Euro spec. The speedo is still in km and the car has only 117km (78,000 miles) Here are some pictures of the car. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()

Get away from the ledge!
Andrew,
I am here to try and talk you down from the ledge. Please, take a moment to catch your breathe, wash the car tomorrow, join us on Sunday for the SEMBC Run, and all will be well with the world. Insurance rates will soon be dropping with some competition coming to the State! regards, Paul

Thanks for the compliments on the car...
I wish I could join you guys on Sunday but once again home life has gotten in the way and I can not make it. It has been like that all summer. It's a great car and it sucks to pay for storage/insurance/plates for something I never use. HELL that is what the Ferrari is for. I truly am on the fence about selling it. If I could get some good money for it in the EU why not at least try? Heck the car can go back to it's motherland as it is a German market car.

I would repeat these famous words of advice: "buy low, sell high." SC values are bad, right now, but I think that they will climb. SCs are so much better as cars than early 911s, that sooner or later the market will remember why we couldn't give away the long hood cars a few years ago, when everyone wanted an SC or a Carrera. I sold my 73 silver sunroof coupe for a song in 1997. I've regretted it ever since, and more so lately.
SCs are just as full of high protein Porsche goodness as the early cars, and this, alone, is reason to keep a good one. |

You forgot to mention the makes of the other 3 cars, if it's a difficult choice he might be throwing the easiest decision of the bunch out there first!
So what are the other 3 cars? Doh , i probably should've read your signature. So I would imagine that the choice is really between the 308 or the SC, correct? Last edited by jwernquist; 11-09-2007 at 08:09 AM.. |

I totally agree with the buy low sell high theory...
But the Euro is so strong, heck the Canadian Dollar is stronger than the US Dollar. Back in 1986 I bought a perfect, original 1969 911S no roof tangerine/black coupe with 70,000 miles from the second owner for what felt like BIG MONEY to me $8500. I sold it 2 years later for $11k and was thinking "wow what a great car to have owned" LOL oh well Hindsight is always 20/20. My idea was not to punt the car for what a US 911SC Market is offering I am considering thinking Globally!

I would like to try to talk you off the ledge of not selling it but selling it in the EU market. If you are not able to drive it then hell yhea sell it to a guy like me who would love her, and drive her, and take really good care of her, etc... But PLEASE don't sell it in the EU. They already have stolen enough cars from us. It makes me sick how many classic cars leave So Cal alone for the perma-damp UK to rust into nothingness. Not too many guys I know bought thier 911 as an investment so if you make a bit less but it still goes to a good home here in the good old US of A you could be responsible for lighting someone's love for these cars just like the dude who raced past my old man's Ford when I was like 10 and I had that same reaction McQueen from the Cars movie had.....Whoa! a Por-sha!!!!!!!!!!!!

JeremyD thanks I like the retro seats/wheels too.
Decent SC Coupes are selling in europe for between $18,000. - $27000. (USD) Naturally all based on condition and in some cases location.
Here the market appears so soft they are going for $9500. - $13000. tops. Again this is for a decent SC in the US. The choice is really the SC and only the SC. The gt4 was hard to find a unrestored one with a good provenance so I really want to keep dusting it.

Todd that is why I started this thread...
if this is what the market is in the EU and I am considering selling then why not market the car in the EU. I am just not sure the best way of going about it should I decide to try. I was hoping I would hear from other Pelicanites who have successfully marketed and sold their cars to overseas buyers.

If you want an honest opinion, here it is: I think you're going to have a difficult time selling that car, at least in the US.
1. No boot space (as evidenced by the center-fill tank) 2. Even if people don't care about the lack of boot space, many (including me) won't like the look of the center fill cap and hood hold-downs. 3. Steel wheels with hubcaps. 4. Plaid interior 5. Fog lights OTOH, if you like all of these items, then keep the car and sell one of the BMWs. It seems to me that the SUV and wagon are a bit redundant. My $.02. Scott

Andrew,
You need to be beaten!!!! If you sell that car... I know of a few "large" men in a nearby state that have vehicles that can make it to your house and persuade you to keep it!!! I'll tell the godfather, "Chris"!!!! All those laughs for what, your Miata???!!!!!

Scott I guess it could be worse...
I could own a Targa. :-)
Moe, Get with it. The Miata is LONG gone. To small for commuting, replaced by a cheap 5 series wagon.

It's all about personal preference. If you like the car, that's all that matters. But, IMHO, the mods to the car will make it more difficult to sell. If you are going to sell the car, my guess is that it will take longer to find a buyer that shares your taste in modifications. OTOH, if the BMWs are stock, you'll likely be able to sell them faster.
My $.02 (which I guess makes $.04 for this thread. ![]()

Wolf! Thanks that's the kind of feedback I was looking for.
I do have very good maintainance records on the car and I would post them. Can you reccomend a couple of places to market the car? What are your thoughts on www.mobile.de ? Are there other car sales sites that cover more of the EU? Mobile seems to pretty much targe the German market.
Scott the BMW's are stock one is a commuter car 64 miles a day (the 5 series) and the SUV is just used when the weather is not 2wd friendly. They are not redundant imho because one gets 28-30mpg and the other gets 19mpg. The wagon is Automatic (great for 32 mile stop and go commute) and the SUV is standard (not commuter friendly) Now the Porsche AND Ferrari are redundant and that is why I am considering selling the Porsche. I think I covered all of your questions Scott? Please feel free to PM anything I might have left unresolved.
