Post Post CV overhaul success story!

What started as a simple CV repack turned into full replacement of all 4 CV joints, all 4 boots, and one of my half-shafts. Although this job was expensive and a little more work than I expected, I am happy to proclaim that my drivetrain mystery vibration is now GONE!!!!!!!!! Boy, am I psyched! Nothing but smoooooooth power delivery now without vibration at all rpms... What a difference!!!! I can't tell you how much of a relief this is now. This stupid shuddering has been haunting me since I bought my car.

As usual, I want to thank everyone who pitched in with their suggestions and guidance. This BBS has been INVALUABLE to me as a non-mechanic who insists on doing all the work myself. Just wanted to share the great news-

Thanks again!
Adam

Great news ... glad to hear it, Adam! I had a feeling that vibration was going to disappear when you replaced that axle with the pitted splines!

Good for you, Adam. I also have an '85. I don't have any noise or vibration but was wondering... was there any change in the lugging that I've notice in 1st or 2nd gear when your driving slowly in town, then suddenly take you foot off the gas without also depressing the clutch (leaving it in drive gear)? I think that's normal, but I'm not sure.
As a fellow non mechanic, what were you reading that gave you the info on how to repack the boots? It's another project I should look into.
regards,
jlex.

jlex-

not sure what you mean by 'lugging', but my car didn't exhibit the usual cv noise symptoms associated with joints with as much damage as mine. i never heard more than an intermittent, low volume 'knocking' that only occurred when cold and turning right... also, i didn't have that slop some most hear coming from letting off the gas pedal while still in gear.

for instructions, i consulted the vw links posted in an earlier post. to be honest with you though, i didn't really pay too much attention to them after just reading through them a little. the job wasn't too difficult as long as i was careful and took my time.

let me know if i can help you in any way with more info-

Thanks, Adam. I'll have to look for similar posts.
By lugging, I meant how the car kind of lunges when in gear (usually first) and you suddently take your foot off the gas. I've always ascribed it to the flywheel not being able to absorb the energy from a sudden deceleration and was normal to the car.
As I hear nothing, I'm assuming my CV joints are okay.

jlex.

What you might be feeling is the decel fuel cut-off at work. The computer shuts off the injectors when the throttle is closed and engine rpm is above a certain speed. Then when the rpm drops to a certain point it turns them back on to avoid stalling. That's when you feel the lunge. Just a thought.
