Unplugged socket in engine bay: resistor relay?

Found the pictured empty relay socket in my engine bay. Looking at the wiring diagram it would seem to be the resistor relay. My spare horn relay plugs into it but I hesitate to try it. Don't want to blow anything up.

Anyone care to guess why the PO may have done this?
Thanks.

Are we playing "Guess what year car this is?" also? ;)
I'll guess that it is pre 1984 from the paper heater hose though it might be a 911 Turbo I guess.
