Lateral Seat Position, ie Side-to-Side
I've searched through thousands of threads discussing seat height and how to lower seats between the tunnel and the outside rocker. I, too, will be lowering my new seats. Perhaps all German racers are 5'6"... Since I'm in the process of having to make custom brackets, I need some info on the following...
The stock position of the seats, compared to the steering wheel and pedal cluster, is outboard, ie ............C B T /clutch brake throttle ............SW / steering wheel ..........SCL / seat centerline I believe this has been discussed before, specifically, that there is a slight angle of both seats toward the hood badge. Was this to compensate for the pedal cluster position being so far towards the tunnel (due to fenderwell)? Comparing my steering wheel centerline to my seat centerline, it looks like the seat is about 3/4-1" further outboard. If there is no interference with shifter, e-brake, etc, would it be advisable to center the seat laterally on the steering wheel? I would appreciate your opinions/comments with some background on how you use your car, ie daily, dual, track only.

I just installed Sparco Evos in my 86 Carrera.
I used Sparco side mounting brackets and made adaptor plates to attach to the stock seat mounting rails. I did what you suggest and shifted the drivers seat about 3/4" laterally. The inside Sparco mounting bracket is basically inline with the stock mounting rail. The outside rail is about 1.5" shy, so I made an adaptor plate to bridge the gap. This shifted the seat over. The passenger seat was off-set the same way, moving it outboard. I did not use sliders so the seat height was reduced at least an inch. I am very pleased with the result. I use the car for Sunday blasts, track days and autocross. |

thanks for the input. i understand that you moved both seats inboard?... or did you mean that you offset the passenger seat in the same direction (to the right) to keep the same amount of elbow room between seats? Thanks for the help. Matt Edit: Okay, I re-read your post and took a few measurements... It looks like this stock configuration gives you about 3.5" between seats at the widest point of the bolsters. if you were to move both of them inboard 3/4", it would get pretty tight. So, I understand that you shifted both of your seats toward the passenger side. After re-assessing my bracket measurement, I'm only going to move the seat about 1/4" inboard. I think i'll just mirror the mounts and call it good. Thanks again. Matt

You got it: both seats moved to the right, when viewed from above.
The Sparcos must be wide though, there is about 1" between drivers seat and the door, and about 1/2" in the center and between the passenger seat and the ps door. I would take a pic, but my digicam succumbed to the lateral g generated by my Jeep!! |
