Newb Fan Belt Question
Hey,
This has got to be the stupidest question ever posted, but I just gotta ask. '88 Carerra, and I'm changing the fan belt for the first time. PO hadn't changed it in a while. I just gotta ask, before I herf too hard on the big nut, does it unscrew in the normal direction (counterclockwise)? I know on some things they change the threading on rotating parts so that they don't unscrew themselves during normal operation. So far, it's not coming off easily and I wanted to double check before I started to get serious on that nut! I checked Bently, Waynes book and the forum but couldn't find an answer to the stupidest question ever Thanks John |
It's a normal nut. You need the special holder tool to do it. If it hasn't been changed in a while you may which to get some PB Blaster on there and let it sit for a bit.

Left or counter/clockwise equals loose........

it's called a spanner wrench and should be in your tool kit, this is what it looks like, the stock one doesn't have the black handle.....using the spanner wrench on the pulley and your socket on the nut position the 2 wernchs where they are close together where you can squeeze them together with both hands, just watch your fingers, this method always works for me. http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_TOLtol_pg5.htm#item26 http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/...rench_P209.JPG |
thanks all. yea, got the tool. I just needed to double check, since I'm a "virgin", before I really started herfing on it. It's stuck might good.

Total of six washers inside and out. Don't bend them with the nut putting it back together.
|
When you tighten the nut, let the fan spin a bit while you tighten (the belt will slip). It will help the belt ride up into its proper groove. As opposed to just cranking on it and possibly cracking the outer pulley half.
|
Just to be clear, if you take a washer off the inside to tighten the belt put it back on the outside. You should ALWAYS have a total of six washers in there in whatever configuration gives the proper tenision on the belt.
