Engine Compartment Pad Thoughts

this past weekend I replaced the crumbling, original sound pad in my 79SC. I searched the forum for thoughts on whether to use the OEM replacement (much lighter than the original) or the foil one. The foil pad weighs less than a pound, but costs maybe 20 percent more than the OEM. I opted for the foil version.

Since my original pad was hanging off, I can't say whether the sound attenuation is any better with the new pad, and I don't ride in the back seat,s o I can't say if the insulation characteristics are any better with the new one. What I can say is that the foil pad helps enormously by providing a light reflecting surface at the back of the engine compartment, making working on the engine a lot easier. Anything that does that for me is a big plus in my book!

Just wanted to give some feedback for future reference!

Matt

That sounds great, and added benefit! If the real number of 911's that had a bad pad were known, it would surprise many. I have seen many pads that have been re-glued over and over, and also some that have just been trimmed off, so they would not look as bad. Looks like you did a good 20% over, investment!!

- palpitate the pad at a few places in the center - you can feel if there is good foam in there

- the foil does not only reflect visible light it also reflects HEAT - right back down onto the induction system of the motor. This has always seemed most unwise to me.

Another Idea

This is my brothers car. he used the Gold foil (apparently reflects heat the best). It took him some time to fit it properly into all of the angles, but it came out looking great I think.

Permanently removed the sound pad this past summer, and the cylinders sing like the von Trapp Family!
