Looks like I need an O2 sensor. Not likely Catalytic converter, but O2 sensor since it is running too rich to pass right?
Okay, I don't want to go through this again, so I'm going to do one swap out, put in the carrera tensioners I just ordered from pelican and the o2 sensor, and maybe a new Cat. Can I get any substitute sensor besides the one for 84 911? the go@damned thing is 204$. I don't mind splicing wires etc to get a different one to work. And lastly, should i just order a new Cat and put it in too? I might was well--what a pain in the ass. (I still have the old one, but how do I know it's working...I mean there's no way to test it that i know of) ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |

Kurt,
You should be able to pass without an opperable cat. So I wouldn't waste the money. My 78SC passed with a bypass pipe and no cat. A wrench should be able to lean it out enough to pass. The O2 sensor is a differentstory and I have no experience, so to that I defer. Good luck. --------------- Paul 78SC Targa |

Kurt,
You can test the O2 sensor by measuring the current on the leads to it while the engine is running. You have to find a way to leave it connected while still attaching a multi-meter. This signal should cycle up and down in a regular pattern. This cycles the mixture as rich/lean, rich/lean. It is possible that yours is sending a constant signal (ie: it's stuck on rich). Search the archives. There are postings about using Ford sensors (which were made by Bosch) as a less expensive identical part. I think you just have to solder in longer wires. BTW, doesn't your 84 already have Carrera tensioners? I have never heard of one failing. Paul, you really can't easily "lean out" a pulsed injection setup like you can on CIS. You can drill out the mixture screw on the flowmeter and adjust I guess, but this is a factory setting and screwing around with it may cause some other drivability problems, and should be a last resort. You should be able to pass w/o a perfect CAT, provided the other emissions components are working well, like the O2 sensor. Good Luck. Kurt, if you end up needing one, here's a new 84-85 02 sensor for $100.

Kurt, I've got one from my '88 that I know is good. Email me your address and I will send it to you. If it works for you, and you want to keep it, we will work something VERY reasonable out.

Partial update:
Once again, you guys simply rule, and so does this bbs. Saved me a bundle. Looking for a Bosch O2 sensor, just ask for 13942 at your local pep boys and you'll be in business. It's exactly the same as the one on my machine, and for only 50$ (rather than the $200+ I've seen around for oem). You'll need to splice it to your connector, but that takes a whole 15 minutes and back in business. My o2 sensor hasn't worked since I've had the car, so we'll see if I same some gas here and there... I just asked for any Bosch they had in stock BTW, and the guy came out with it..so you pay around $150 for the fancy mercedes plug in? That is truly hilarious. ------------------ Kurt B '84 Carrera Cab. carrera_cabriolet@yahoo.com |
