The alternative to the RS door handle.

Hi,
The plastic handle broke off on the third day after installed.
I went to the cabinet shop and these might be a good alternative.
Let see what you guys thinking.

Have you seen.. Fiat 500 door handles?
They look the same as

Some people are using the metal grab handle from a 356 door.

Keep it Porsche!

Burint 12-27-2007 06:20 AM

Henry,
Thanks for a great suggestion. What does the 356 grab handle look like and where
can I find them? Is it the one on this pet?

Wevo makes some nice ones.

And only 78.00 a piece! :eek::rolleyes:

Cheers

gerrygug 12-27-2007 08:27 AM

Yeah, but that is only $77.00 Canadian!

I think that EMPI makes reproduction pull handles that look an awful lot like the 356 ones...only much cheaper. How about an old leather belt and some rivets?

Cost no object WEVO's are sweet

You can also use the 356 padded armrest/ door pull. I do not think the hardware store option is well suited for your car. I like to stick with something the factory may have plucked out of the parts bin back in the day. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1198781575.jpg

RSBob posted a nice DIY door pull project using nylon webbing about a month or so ago. It's not 911R-authentic, but neither are most of the door pull options shown above, and it's lighter than all of them. :)

That's it. I did find one in a 356 catalog...............for $195.00!!!

I won't even bother to give you the vendor. I'll see if I can do better.

Someone in the last couple months posted on using this handle for the RS type door panels. I'll keep looking...

I've also heard about using the Fiat 500 door handle. Here's a picture of one:
http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1198792717.jpg

The store I pulled this picture from sells them for 1.8 euros. For that price you could afford to stock up on them and replace as needed.

Edit: Oh, and I've seen the cabinet door handle solution before. It's pretty tacky.

Being a Fiat part, that's good advice

Would suggest a pair of early MGB door handles (GLZ118) - 4.5" centres, otherwise very similiar to the Fiat handles but considerably more robust:

The trick to long-lasting original RS pull handles is knowing how to use them. Use it to set the door in motion, but then let go and allow the door to close on its own. If you slam the door closed like an old Chevy, they will break every time.

Burint 12-27-2007 04:33 PM

Martin,
The MGB, what kind of material do they made of?
Thanks for the suggestion.

The handles seem to be made of black bakelite (or dense plastic?) c/w with a pair of (stainless?) steel brackets.

As mentioned they are significantly more robust than the RS handles albeit with slightly larger fixing centres and were recommended to me as an effective replacement for the Fiat rubbish although I am yet to install my set.

Fixed that for you.

sorry, couldn't resist.

Thinking about it from the uninitiated girlfriends point of view, having a "high performance car" with "Fancy smancy door panels and handles..that you can't pull on...seems ...ummmm...humorous. ;)
