Cam Timing?
My car is having its spring checkup completed today which includes too many items to be listed. My mechanic said that he could adjust the cam timing to boost the power of the car. He said this included taking the cam covers off and adjusting the cams on the chains. I assume he is talking about advancing the cam timing up to the limit of Porsche's specs. Is this correct and if so is there really any benefit to it? I have never read anything on this before on this board, in Excellence, Pano or even Bruce's "Handbook."

if you first check the cam timing by pulling the upper rocker covers off and using the dial gauge setup, you may save yourself time and money. if they're in the middle of the adjustment spec, you wouldn't realize much improvement. if they're on the low end and you went to the max, you probably would. if they're on the low end the chains may be stretched too.

Well, I guess it depends on what car you have and what your timing is 'set' at now! Bruce does discuss the issue in the Handbook, but only in regards to SCs. And the issue is not really 'more power,' but where the torque curve is 'biased' ... low end, or top end!

Depending on how your car is setup, you (he)might want to retard the cams. As stated before, it depends on where you want the power curve.
