Impromptu engine drop this afternoon....

No, not mine!!! My new engine feels like she's getting stronger and stronger. My buddy Brad ("Brad w" on Pelican) wanted to chase some leaks on his wife's '80 SC. We were considering a partial drop to look at the usual suspects, but about 15 minutes into it, I said we oughta drop the whole thing, and he said ok. I think it is because he wanted to break in his brand new 30' X 40' shop! Although I think he's going to put a new lift higher on the priority list.

Good thing, as the t-stat, breather and sender didn't appear to be the culprit, it seems to be the engine mounted cooler. Plus, it's a good time for Brad to clean it all up and do the while-you're-in-there stuff as well as checking the clutch, etc. Also, he's a candidate for a tensioner upgrade as the chain cover on the driver's side is a leaker too.

At any rate, here's Brad with the requisite picture of him in the engine bay:

Hehehehe, I figured that would happen. :D

One thing I must say, the Motronic is a bit easier to work with in getting ready for the drop. More vacuum lines on the CIS engine.

Ed, thanks for the help.
I have the engine about 80% clean. I will finish up the cleaning and then get pics so I can take off the intake and start the re-gasket adventure.
I have to find out what to do next, (While you in there stuff)

Ok got everything off the engine and all parts cleaned. I had a couple of connector’s brake. The big pin connector in the front by the firewall and the one that goes into the distributor. There was quite a bit of build up on top of the motor from the breather hose area but can not really find a sure thing for a leak. I would almost bet that the rockers are leaking.
I am going to go ahead and do the pop-off valve for the air box but not sold on the chain upgrade. Monday I will hit the store and start re-assembly.

The Carrera chain update kit is important - these were fixed for a reason...

Nice car! Great work, it really helps to have someone help you who know what they're doing for your 1st engine drop!

Brad - What kind of wheels are you running?

Dropped my engine last year for a "re-seal". Decided on a top-end...while I was in there. :)
