Post windshield sealant?

There has been some discussion recently about reinstalling 911 windshields, to which I contributed by writing that 911 windshields didn't require sealant. (This was what I was told by the local bodyshop-supplies store.) I was corrected, so now I need to know, what is the sealant that's supposed to be used? The factory manual says only that it's "special sealant" and the new Bentley manual doesn't devote a single word to windshield installation. When I go to the bodyshop supplier, they show me a "sealant" that is actually a very strong glue, for modern windshields that in fact are an essential part of the passenger-airbag deployment system, and warn me that if I use it, it'll make a terrible mess. So what is it I need?

3M resealant # 08633. called windo-weld. get a pump that screws onto the bottle. it's in the 3M catalog. use a wide lip seal #91154122503. the corners won't fall in. often, if you have a pristine, smooth, fully painted window area, the sealer may not be req'd. get it wet first and find out. the sealing job is messy but regular solvent from your solvent tank and lots of shop rags clean it up ok.

I think it will really depend on the year of the car and the type of window you have.

My '85 has the aluminum trim and does not use sealant. I installed this thanks to a call to Pelican. It looks great and no leaks.

email me if you want the whole job description...
