Orientation of MFI fuel pump?

Is there an "up" or "down" when installing an MFI fuel pump?

I just received a used unit which was described as functioning/non-leaking. However, upon installation, it is leaking out of the silver "cap" you see in the pic below (next to the power connector). This pump is being installed in my 914/6 conversion and mounts in the stock position as the similar-looking original 914 pump. In that installation, the silver cap points downward, and that's where the leak is originating. What is under the silver cap that could be causing this leak? Can/should these pumps be able to run in any orientation? Is there an up/down or top/bottom?

It fits one way in the bracket on the car, but that makes no difference. It is sealed unit that should not leak regardless of its orientation. You have bad fuel pump.

Danny are you looking to sell the pump?

I need a parts pump so I'd be interested if you are going to get another non leaker.

Not sure. The longer I leave it on the car, the less it leaks. Previous owner stored it "dry" for 4 ~ 6 months, so I'm hoping the seals swell and the leak will subside completely.

I do have a leaking 914 fuel pump (which looks exactly the same) for parts if you need it.

Unfortunately the internal pieces I need are calibrated differently for each pump, the bodies and motors are the same.

If the proper MFI pump doesn't work out let me know.

Thanks Robert
