Afr installation ideas

This post Custom Quad Combo Gauge led me to wonder what would be involved to install an O2 sensor / sensors in my ‘79 US and potentially utilize one of these gauges. I did a search but could not find an appropriate thread which explained the general installation requirements and process. I have SSI’s and cat-delete. Would I install O2 sensors in each HE? Can sensors be incorporated into a single analog gauge, or does that defeat the purpose? Any product recommendations?

Thanks

Jason

I’m installing the AFR sensor below on my ‘82SC. I had an O2 bung welded to the driver’s side header. I don’t see much benefit on a CIS car to having dual sensors. I already have a big oil pressure light in the clock space and didn’t want another gauge. The one below syncs up to your phone. I’ll use it mainly for tuning.

I added mine in a DIY panel. My SSIs had a bung on the drivers side. With CIS sending the same fuel pressure/amt to every cylinder, covering each side with a sensor and gauge might be overkill. However, it could help identify or isolate developing problems to at least 3 cyl

Thanks for the replies - so single O2 sensor makes sense, and I like the idea of the Bluetooth connectivity; no need for a gauge.

I didn't want to look at all those blinky lights all the time, so I put it in the ashtray, with some grinding required. No smoking allowed anyway, so I put the ashtray to use.

Then I added an inline switch, to kill it so the blinky lights didn't peek out when closed.

I just check it every once-in-a-while, at steady level cruise.

And no need to route a wire from engine compartment to dash.

I presume you bought a 6’ extension; where are you mounting the Bluetooth sending unit, and where are you connecting to 12V+ ?

An unplugged or inop WB gauge disables the sensor heating circuit. I added some info in this related thread:

two sensors one AF gauge

I didn’t buy it (yet). The included length of cable makes for a total of 31” from the top of the O2 sensor back to the unit. My thought was to mount it in the area shown in the picture (not my car) and run the cable directly below to where the O2 bung is in the header. My car is in the shop having the suspension pan replaced, so I haven’t been able to study the installation more.

That area had occurred to me, but in reading the product manual, it was noted that the location should not be an area that gets hot. Hence my assumption that I would need an extension to route it into the cabin

IMO, a valuable addition. Knowing the A/F ratio under all conditions = best performance and long engine life.

All the installations I have seen have been in engine bays. Granted these were in water cooled American classics with more room under the hood. I’ll explore options when I get the car back and report back.

I threw a Q at Performance Electronics, who advised that their PE Wideband has a max operating temp of 167 F.

How hot would you think our engine bays get under normal operating conditions in summer heat?
