Any idea what these hoses used to be connected to?

Hello,

This has bugged me for a while, but I'm finally getting into a bunch of things on the car (1987 930) so I thought I'd post these pic's in order to get opinions or answers.

On the passenger side of the engine, this hose is plugged with a spark plug:

On the driver's side of the engine, this hose is plugged with another spark plug:

another shot:

From inside the rear wheel area (driver's side), this appears to be the other side of the hose:

Any idea what didn't come with the car?

Thanks!

Eric

I'd guess this was part of the air injection system. Terre should be (unless it was removed) an air pump on the left front side of the engine. Air is pumped into the exhaust headers right at the manifold flange... Looks like this was removed on your car, and they plugged the hoses.

the cars are designed to run super rich under full boost, and the air was injected/added to the exhaust to help burn the excess hydrocarbons.

removing the system should have no detrimental effect on performance, but it does make the cars produce more smog...

Does it have an aftermarket exhaust or at a minimum has the cat been removed? My '88 930S has a euro exhaust (no-cat) installed and the PO gave me the original as well as the air pump. Just curious if we can tie those two points together.

Diagrams are extremely useful!!! I've got two books on order (bentley and the projects books), not sure if either will include that detail or not though.

I thought the cat was there - will confirm tonight. I did fail MD emissions and was going to take the route of replacing the O2 sensor and try again (CO failed - 3.x with an allowable 1.1x). I'll post those exact numbers tonight too.

Any guesses as to why someone would remove the air injection system? I haven't dug further to see if it is just disconnected or removed, so I'll look more at that tonight too. I'll ask the PO, but I think he was number 8 or 10 or 12... He had the car for 3 years and 10,000 miles and I'm not sure that he did much to it (based on receipts he passed on).

Can't thank you guys enough for the info!

Eric

Air injection system remove and plug, plugs are available from several vendors. Looks like your pump's gone they just plugged the lines. Remove the cat as well if not already. You will be a happy camper, you can get the car to smog test with out them easily. 87 a good year!

It's got to be expensive to do a tune up on that car with how many spark plugs it has

They didn't charge me any extra for service, but I'm not sure if they replaced those plugs or not .

I think I'll work on passing the smog test before I take anything else off. Here are my readings from the November test:
HC CO NOx
State Standard 220 PPM 1.20 PCT N/A
Inspection Reading 116 PPM 3.10 PCT N/A

Have until March to pass. Haven't looked under the car yet tonight for the cat so I'll post again later.

Obviously you used to have a V8 in there ... somebody backdated it to a Porsche flat 6 and left the plugs ...
Sorry, I've been resisting since I first saw this post. Just couldn't resist any longer ...

I found a Weltmeister Air Injection Plug kit online, but I'm really hesitant to lose those two extra plugs! Since the kit comes with 6 plugs I'm wondering if there are 4 more spark plugs in there somewhere blocking hoses I haven't found yet!. That would make it a v12...

Cat is there. For now. I also now see where the pump used to be bolted on (comparing to the diagram above). And that the left hose is #53 from the diagram and the right hose (pass side) is #55 from the diagram.

Also located the rather expensive replacement pump (online) which I don't think I'll be buying.

I'm doing a bunch of stuff right now so once everything is back together I'm going to try to get some time with my neighbor's lift and see what else I can get into. Right now I am working on the stereo, speakers, gauges (new light bulbs and corrosion removal), inline fuse for headlight switch and a couple of other things. For some reason I thought I was going to buy this and just drive every day!!

Thank you again for all the help!

Eric
