A fun Porsche story.

I was told that this would be enjoyed more if I copied it to this section.....

Here is the story of my 911, which I think is a fun read as I am extreemly lucky. I coresponded on Rennlist a few years ago and here are the exerpts seperations are different posts:

>>>I go through a bit of a bidding war on an E-Bay Advertised plain but clean 911T 4-spd stored for several years but running, and get her with a Snip bid for $6600.<<<

I picked the E-Bay car up over the weekend with my wife in Vegas and stayed over to see if we could win back some of what we spent (yeh right!) and had a great time. We had three little things pop up. The first was the ignition switch spring back from the start position is shot so you have to manually twist the key back after you crank her up (no big deal). More on that later. After one hour of talking and such we close our deal (the seller was not a 911 guy at all and inherited the car from his father who he had fallen out of communication with), shake hands and off we go. Despite an advertised flat spot off the line, she pulls really well for a little 2.2 T and sounds just right in a crowded parking garage full of Ferraris and such (Vegas, you know!). About a block out of McCarren Airport onroute to the Strip we have the second 'thing', we get about as close as you can to becoming a running board for a lifted SUV ;{ the behemoth didn't turn infront of us, he swerved with force and I found that our little 911 needs the front brakes looked at since she promply locked up the rear and not much of anything in the front, but marginal 911 brakes from 1970 are still much better than most and with a little pedal modulation we were able to read the brand, model and size of the rear tires as they went by and not the front tires as they rolled over us!! With a quick change of our underwear complete, we decide to valet park the car since we figured it would be a bit safer than the big self parking garages in Vegas. I give the valet a few pointers on how to drive her, shift her, a couple of pumps to start her and watch out for the key issue! Well a few hours we ask for the car back to change hotels (long story). After a few minuets I hear that flat six pulling nicely thru the parking garage but it sounds a little funny (like it is supercharged). As the car approaches (quite sexy face on her by the way) I hear the distinctive sound of the engine running with starter still engaged!! That punk kid forgot and couldn't hear the scream of the starter for the LONG drive from where they put her!! The poor starter was smoking badly and sounding like hell. I shut her off and let the thing cool for 20 min while lecturing the valet a bit. I start her up unevenfully and figure no harm no foul. We find a new hotel, self park, spend the night, lose a little money on the tables, and go get the car the next morning to head home. We decide to gas up outside of Vegas and hit the road with a fair amount of traffic keeping me from exploring her abilities much. About 50 miles out of town we stop for gas and a drink (98 deg outside!!) and the stater is no longer starting ;( the bang on the starter trick is not only hard to do on a 911 but very hot and in this case ineffective! My wife has to do everything in her power to keep me from going back to Vegas for a little valet bashing! Thankfully the car is very light and I have no problem pushing our new baby to life and my wife is a good sport too. As I get back on the freeway, the traffic has died down a bit and I start to play with her and making sure all is well. I hit 4th and now really want to get a five speed (she has very shrt gears). I don't know what made me try it but I thought lets just see what happens if I go to where 5th is, you guessed it, 5th. How a 5spd can be mistaken for a 4 spd I don't know! That really made up for the starter issue and we had a great drive home. She pulls way too good for a 2.2T so I will do some exploratory surgury in the coming days to see what is UP. She burned no oil, does leak a bit but not too badly. She pops a bit on decell so I will check the exhaust studs and exhaust pipes to make sure she isn't pulling in cold air. She runs fat (rich) which is the cause of the flat spot I am sure which is much much worse after filling the tank. The fuel system is not stock and needs to be changed since I think she is getting too much fuel pressure and spilling over the fuel bowls. I will have to see though. Fun fun!!

>>>I do the obligatory tearing into the car for a new owner to find some interesting pieces on board like a German liscence plate, a couple of spare jet sets for the non-standard Webers on her adn some old German race publications with rally racing and other sporting events in them.<<<

I started looking into the cars history and traced the German liscence plate I found tucked away in the front truck. Turns out this is no normal 2.2T. I find rally history in Germany and in Belgum. I also find a story in a German publication about an event where Enzo Ferrari and a German Ralley driver allowed eachother to drive the others car. Enzo drove my car! I am ordering a Certificate of Authenticity on the car.

>>>Now I really start looking at her<<<

I don't know much about the later years of the car, but there are some VERY interesting little bits I am finding out about the car. The missing trim on the bumpers is curious because I looked on the inside and there seems to never have been any trim mounted which I think is a R or RS or RSR only type situation. The rockers have the holes for the trim but they have never had the trim on from what I can tell because the holes don't show signs of having screws in them. The engine has factory WEBER Carbs on it which were not available in 70' unless you were getting a Werks car for racing. The distributer is a BOSCH unit too which is wrong. Now I know that both the carbs and the distributer could have been changed out but the previous owner said they hade been on the car in the early 70's when the car came over from Germany and his dad owned it. The car is a Euro car with, get this, the original german plate from you guessed it, stuttgart. Now perhapts I am reaching a bit here but it could have had a Frankfurt plate or a Berlin plate etc... but to have a Stutgart plate is again VERY interesting. The 4 spd that turned out to be a 5 spd is very short and appears to have non-stock gearing and is a LSD box. I will pull the codes to see what it is. I have driven lots of early 911s and if I closed my eyes and drove the car (getting only 60% throttle or so!) she feels like she has a very strong running 2.4 ltr 'S' engine vs the 2.2 ltr 'T' she is suposed to be. I know Porsche built many Werks Rally cars in 68'-71' with 200-230 HP engines that were labeled 'T' cars. I guess I should just wait for the certificate.

>>>After getting back my paperwork I am indeed a lucky guy<<<

Confirmed 911 werks car ordered as a rally car in 69' built November 70', options included a rally spec motor which has 10.3:1 compression, 40mm Webers, Bosch single plug distributer running 33deg advance from 2000rpm up, Porsche rally cams. Fuel cell (gone), Car has trim delete, radio delete (undeleted at some point), race seats, no sunroof, green glass, rear seat delete, R roll bar (gone), front and rear gravel / skid plates (gone), special 901/05 gearbox with LSD, Koni sport suspension (gone) now Bilstein 'S', and special interior tool bin (gone). Car was silver (then burgundy then platnum gold).

Later I found that the car had at least four hood mounted rally lights (Gone), it had 4 rally placks on the rear grill (gone, but I found three of them in a collection in Germany and paid way to much for them!), engine with Webers tuned and getting full throttle with some linkage repairs and pedal bushings and new headers and rally pea-shooter exhaust made 215 HP at the wheels and 220 TQ! The 901 box is VERY short making 110 MPH at 7500 RPMs!

So what is she? The word is that if she is not an R than most werks race cars of this age are called STs. This car is not a 9" F&R fender car like a textbook ST but basically everything else is spot on. Also it has been said that all STs have the 2.5 ltr engine but I have found that to be false.

I have included some pics.

Kurt, I think you have enough cars already! I was told the car should be insured for $75,000 minimum. Not bad for a $6600 plus $500 lossed at the tables investment!

Not looking to sell right now!

Well, I don't know what it is, but the tach isn't right for a 10.3:1 engine! Good luck on your further research.

And, BTW, lovely car. I use that same color as my accent on my satin black rat rod. I could pattern my car after that one a be very happy. AAMOF, it is patterned after that car, pretty much.

Like Kurt said, nice write up.

OK ... so, where are the engine pics???

Nice paint, and really great seats, too, I might add! You really should get the engine dyno-ed, just so you get a better idea just how great a deal you REALLY got! And when you post the dyno charts ... we can be even more envious! I suspect you need a 10K tach with a 7500 rpm redline ...

You really need to get a set of Bosch H1 or H4 headlights and some proper yellow Hella 128 N.O.S. fog lights, too!

I don't have any engine pics actually. She is getting a full strip for a respray back to the original silver. I am also rounding up the original rally lights and rock guards and such for her. She had hold downs front and rear so those are going back on. I am also looking for an early fuel cell too.

Great find you lucky dog! How about some shots of the plate and racing pubs you found in the car, as well as the badges you located?

Oh, and I bet you won't let a valet near that thing again!

I dont have access to the plate and mags right now as they are with the car but here is a pic of the badges. One does not belong, any guess which one? I got one as a part of a pair that would not be seperated.

She actually does not sound that good honestly. She needs the pea-shooter replaced with the correct RSR style large pipe muffler (she did sound good open pipe but I did not have megaphones to put on her to realy seal the deal). She sounds a bit VW right now at low RPMs ;(

I'd love to see the Kardex.

Maybe you could ring up Juergen Barth's replacement at Porsche to fig out who drove this and where.

I will get everything togather for a scan in. I do have some driver names and such but I don't think any super famous guys drove the car except for Enzo that is. I will be taking lots of pics of the car when she is done with her repaint with a nice jungle background and at the track when I run her from time to time to make sure she doesent forget her roots!
