PLEASE HELP ...Removal of whole A/C system from 78 911SC (York system)
Please help, could somebody please provide details on how to fully remove the AC system from my 78 911sc, INCLUDING COMP, EVAPORATOR, PIPES, WIRING. I began by removing the evaporator and it started leaking refrigerant fluids and gases...Is this normal and can I proceed?

Welcome to the board.
The gas should be extracted from the system using correct equipment as as it is illegal to vent it to the atmosphere. It's kinda hard to describe everything - you'll find it pretty intuitive once you start. I just started at the back and unbolted everything I could see and pulled lines and wires through. If you go to clarke-rubber you can find plenty of rubber grommits/blanking plugs to close up holes. In case you didn't realise, there's an Ausie/NZ forum on this board. Look for 'Rucool', he's in Sydney and is an auto A/C professional - I'm sure he'll answer any of your questions. Cheers |
Once the gas has started leaking there won't be too much left in the system.
+1 to Fishcop's reference to refrigerant recovery. There is almost 3 lbs of R-12 in an unconverted system. Quite a lot actually for auto air, I guess because of all the remote condensers, distance to the evaporator and line size and length. Don't get too much of that stuff on your fingers or you might suffer some frost bite... |
Maybe you should try to sell some of those components after you remove them because it is apparent that they are refrigerant tight and might help out someone looking to repair their system... Just a thought.

If you want to get fresh air out of your dash vents (which previously only supplied A/C air), then you will have to convert your ventilation plumbing as well. I'm in the process of doing this now and I am doing a write-up on the project. I will start a thread this weekend showing the process complete with pictures.

+2 on the refrigerant recovery - but unless you re-tightened the line quick, it's too late now.
Just follow the lines - big hose goes out under car into engine compartment to compressor. Little hose goes from compressor to condensor1 on your engine compartment deck lid to condensor2 up front to reciever/drier behind the LF wheel to back to your evap. Wiring is similarly simple. Be careful removing the thermostat - the capillary tube can break on bending back and forth too often. That's about all there was to itSmileWavy |

Sweet, throw another skrimp on the barbi. I just did a partial removal of my a/c, only whats in the engine compartment. Be careful when pullin out the thick hoses, dont snag any wires and braek off any of those brittle conectors in the back of the injector housing.

If the refrigerant is still in, a recovery unit and tank is required to pull the r-12 out and safely store it. If you know a HVAC guy or know of a shop that does auto air shouldn't be a problem.
