I asked the question when we started the new house project. Closing is in about 30 days providing the latest change does not impact schedule too much. The responses played a big part in the design of the house. Outlets for 110, 220, phone, cable, computer... just check the thread -- Backyard Buddy looks like a great solution.

Hi Everyone !

Interesting that this thread would come up right now. I just moved into a condo that I bought largely based on the great garage that is attached. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/biggrin.gif I have been looking at a lot of sites on the web to get some ideas for my ideal garage. I saw the Groit’s stuff and another that has some really nice Porsche garages on it.

The OCR region did a progressive garage tour last year where we went from one members garage to and others throughout the day having different snacks and goodies at each – it was a great time ! I got a lot of great ideas from each of them too.

I had a mess to start with but I got everything cleared out and started to go to work. I painted the whole garage with a bright white gloss paint – much to the horror of the guys at Home Depot that thought I was crazy to use it. They were saying it would be so bright it would hurt my eyes. http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/cool.gif Bummer, I was looking for something a little brighter !! http://www.pelicanparts.com/ultimate/eek.gif

I am going to have two separate work areas. One is for dirty work (the long work bench with the pegboard above it) and the other is for clean work (the cabinet with drawers and separate cabinets above). I found this great checker board contact paper that I am using around the garage as a border where the walls meet the ceiling.

I am looking into doing the floor with black & white linoleum tiles – anyone have any experience with using these ??

What you see in the pictures is a work in progress so I will update these when I get finished.

Oh, the pic of the wheel ? That is a 996 chrome twist wheel that I had that had been curbed real hard on the inside. It was junk so I cut it in half and I am going to make a clock out of it and put it up over the workbench between the cabinets.

I post an update when I get closer to being done.

Great pics! Thanks for the motivation. I painted my walls the same color last year and now am accumulating ideas for cabinet and workbench designs. Those stick-on squares of linoleum in black and white idea is good, would the jack wheels sink into linoleum? Can't wait to see your finished product with that clock!!

Only one thing missing. Speedvision on the tube 24 hrs a day. Just for inspiration of course.

JimT,
What paint, 2 part epoxy, do you or anyone else recommend for the garage floor. I thought as long as the floor was degreased and etched with a light acid, the Home depo 2 part epoxy would be fine. I'm moving into a new house I finally bought next week and the garage is a top priority. And it going to be BRIGHT WHITE! (Don't tell my significant other. She thinks the inside of the home deserves first attention.)

Great pictures!! Nice looking usable work space.

I was investigating paint for the floor as well. I am not sure I have everything in the right order. From what I read, the concrete must cure TWO YEARS before paint. Can you seal it right away? -- by the time I start moving in it will have cured about 4 months.

Benjimen Moore makes a concrete stain. It has silicone in it. It soaks into the concrete so it cannot peel. It is a little slippery when snow gets on it. I just built my shop and used it. Scratches do not show either.

That use of silicone would seem to inhibit future paint adhesion, even more difficult since it penetrates the surface -- am I off base here?

Still looking for suggestions on sealer that can be painted over when concrete cured. Some design may be in store for the floor.

In another link, "Mike the Mechanic" talks about taking his car out of winter storage and then having a snow storm two days later. I went even further than that. I took the P-car out of the garage and tore down the garage. "Insanity!" you say. Well, not really - the P-car is safely with a trusted mechanic, getting the dead Sportomatic extracted and a fresh 915 5 speed installed.

As I build a new garage to replace the old one, I have a chance to incorporate some of the ideas offered in this link. Black and white tiled floors? Probably not a good idea here in Minnesota with all of the salt, slush, and dirt falling off the cars in the winter. Lots of storage for tools, good lighting, and heat? You bet!
