Cat Converter on Carrera

The bracket that holds the cat converter shield on my car is broken. The bracket is mounted by two bolts to the shield and by two bolts to the interface between converter and exhaust. The two bolts to the exhaust system are in pretty bad shape.

What is the best method to break them loose? I'm guess cut the bolt heads with a dremel and then knock out the bolts with a center punch and hammer?

Also, when I replace the bolts should I replace the gasket between the cat and exhaust?

Heat is your friend if you have access to it. Mine were in worse condition (couldn't get a wrench on them), so I cut/drilled/cussed them off...a real PITA. Yep on the new gasket.

You'll find it easier to cut the nuts off, rather than the bolt heads. Bolts are extremely hard, nuts not so much. I used an air chisel.

I drove to Midas where a guy I know used an acetylene torch to melt them away. Charged me $20 and it was almost instant...

Stainless bolts, Permatex?, and gaskets...

At the temperature these things see the type of stainless bolts you can find in hardware stores will still corrode. The best 2 additions you can make to this list is copper nuts and a really good antiseize.

Most of the antiseize you can find is aluminum based. It is better then nothing but it really isn't that good. Really good antiseize is copper or nickel based. That will insure you can take it apart later.

I dont have access to heat at home. Once I cut either the bolt head or nut, will the bolt come out or will I need to drill it out?

Punch it out and don't worry about that shield. Mine was broken the same way and I tossed it.

When I had my muffler and other parts off, that 2 eared bracket had one of the ears broken and the actual guard had one of the mounting ear tabs cracked off towards the front of the guard. I mig welded the bracket ear back on and the mounting tab on the guard was also mig welded. Being these parts are stainless steel, that is what I used in my mig. They came out great, and have been there now close to 4yrs. The muffler to cat does need a new gasket. Your old gasket will probably have bits and pieces that won't want to just pull off, you will need a grinder of some type to get a flat sealing area again. The factory gasket # 911 111 191 01 is what is called for, but a quality 2-1/2" header collector gasket will work. Good luck!! Tony.

Thanks for all of the feedback. This really throws a wrench in the process for me. I was thinking about just removing the two bolts so that a new bracket could be mounted. But reading the link that burgermeister posted indicates that I'm going to need heat and the plan to punch out the bolts after I grind the heads probably will not work by itself.

I might just see I some one can weld the broken seam.

Just cut the thing off. Don't drive in tall grass or piles of dead leaves.

What tcar said! I have a euro premuffler (runs cooler than a cat) so it's unnecessary and I don't have one...it's just a heat shield to protect the ground below from burning.

If you drive in inclement weather, the shield also keeps the water / slush off the cat, which probably increases the durability of the steel shell by preventing all that thermal cycling and local quenching caused by every puddle you drive through...
